The
first Eva to battle an angel; it is piloted by Shinji Ikari,
and is usually the main force in battles against the angels.
It has a tendency to do many unexpected things though; it
activates with no power or entry plug, or just goes bezerk -
and this is attributed to Yui (Shinji's mother) protecting
her son, as her soul is the core of Unit-01. After consuming
the 14th angel, it obtained limitless power (an S^2 engine).
Also, as with all the Evangelions the body of the unit was
made partly from Lilith, which is why it could be used in
the human complementation project when the Lance of Longinus
was lost. It was the central part of the third impact.
