This
is the first Eva constructed for real battles, and is
piloted by Asuka Souryu, the second child. It was designed
and manufactured in Japan, but assembled and activated in
Germany, and was later flown back to Japan to assist with
fighting the angels. Used as its core was the soul of
Asuka's mother Kyouko after she committed suicide, but Asuka
only discovered this after the defeat of the 17 angels. The
fifth child, Kaoru Nagisa, also piloted this Evangelion
temporarily while Asuka was in her stage of mental
breakdown.
