Pro Wrestling

As much as I love the Sega Master System, there just seems to be an overwhelming amount of crappy games in it's library. Like this game here, Pro Wrestling. Being the only wrestling game for the system, you're probably very happy or sad that that's the case, being as this game turned out really horrible. I don't think anyone in their right mind can play this game for more then 5 minutes and still consider it fun, it gets real repetitive, real fast.

After getting pass the title screen, where a person (who seems to be on Prozac) tries to punch through the title to give you the peace sign, you get to select from 4 tag teams. These teams are the Mad Soldiers, Orient Express, Great Maskmen, and the Crush Brothers, all of which have basic attacks (punch, kick), but each individual fighter have special techniques. Most of these techniques can usually be performed when the other fighter bounces off the ropes (after throwing them there of course), they range from Green Mask's Karate Kick, Elder Crusher's Drop Kick, and Iron Soldier's Elbow Smash. And the other techniques can be performed when your opponent is on the ground, you have to be beside the fighter and hold the punch button for a sec or 2 to make it work though, so you have to time it right. There are also other things that only certain teams can do, such as climb the poles or pick up a chair. Now the actual punching and kicking parts of the fight can be a bit hard at first, and sometimes annoying. You have to approach your opponent at their top or bottom angles if you want to successfully punch/kick them, like what you would do in most beat em ups. And you need to get used to this method if you want to win the later Titles (in which one hit from your opponent will send you to the ground). One annoying thing about the opponent punching or kicking you, is that most of the time you can't escape until you get knocked down, get attack by a special technique, and THEN retreat.

In a one player game, you have to fight through three Titles, the Mexican, Pacific, and World League Titles. To defeat your opponent, you have to drain all of his life from his life bar, and you have to do this within three minutes, so you can't fool around much. It doesn't matter either if you have more life then he does when time runs out, you'll still lose the round, which I think sucks. This can be really annoying at times, because for most of the round you're trying your best to drain all of your opponent's energy. But then he'll run to his corner and tag his partner (if you don't stop him before he gets there), which usually has a full life bar, and now you have to drain all of his energy and you won't have enough time left to do so, and thus, you'll lose the round. As you progress through the rounds, your opponents will get more aggressive, they'll get up much quicker after getting knocked down and they can knock you out in less hits, so the later fights can get a bit aggravating since the timing for everything has to be right.

If you thought those weren't bad enough, here's the biggest flaw in the first player game: the length of the fights. In each of the three Titles, you have to beat each tag team TEN ROUNDS in a row, so that's a grand total of THIRTY ROUNDS throughout. This is what makes the first player mode really repetitious, by the time you reach the 5th round of the first Title, you'll be bored out of your mind doing the same damn thing over and over and over and..... If you actually do try to attempt to go through all three Titles, make sure you have some time to spare, because it takes up to an hour to complete the whole game. And really now, do you actually consider doing the same exact repetitious thing over and over again for an hour fun? It really isn't worth it, especially since you just get a GAME OVER screen, accompanied with a silly ''circus'' tune when you reach the end. The two player mode is just slightly more enjoyable then the first player mode.....slightly. At least here you don't have to go through ten freaking rounds, just beat one round and win. But that's just it, it would've been nice if they put a little more effort into it, because basically, it's exactly like the one player mode, minus the length and just a little bit more fun.

The graphics are okay, but a bit weird at times. The wrestlers themselves are all super deformed, think of Alex Kidd if they made a wrestling game with him. The audience seems to be filled with a bunch of muppets that wobble their heads left and right, guess they couldn't get actual people to watch the crappy fights. The referees (who look like giants compared to everything else) must be drunk, since they always seem to dance at the top of the ring and stick their asses in the air when they do a countdown, and all four of the referees just happened to be bucktoothed apparently. But perhaps the weirdest thing is the wrestlers animations, every time you see them at a different angle, they almost look like a completely different person. Like Dragonfly from Orient Express, when he looks straight ahead, he has this crazy psycho look and now has a unibrow, when he's on the floor, he looks like he's about to take a dump, and when he gets hit, he has a constipated look on his face. The music in the game is average at best, nothing really stands out. The main tune you hear in the fights is very upbeat and energetic, it fits, but at the same time it feels out of place. You can barely hear any of the muffled sound effects during fights since the loud music over shadows it. So as far as you can tell, it's like there's almost no sound at all in the game.

If you're thinking about playing this game solo, don't. This has got to be the most boring and repetitious game I've had yet to play on the SMS, only play it with another person if you're going to, but even I wouldn't recommend playing it just for that. If you're looking for a good wrestling game to play, look elsewhere, the Sega Master System doesn't have one.
