These plans sent by Allen Martin
I have an idea on how to make chain mail for paintball armor that is
easier
than "your" wire plan. Use small key rings. They are made of spring
steel,
and when used with a six-in-one pattern, could probably stop a gunshot.
That's overkill for paintball, so you might want to use a four-in-one
pattern. I've heard that it takes about 7000 rings in a chainmail
suit, so
you will have to find a place where you can buy them in super bulk. If
you
find somewhere that you could get this many for less than fifty bucks,
please e-mail me their phone number, e-mail, or address. This is a
much
easier way to make chain mail, but it may take longer. The benefits
are
that it is really strong and will not rust. The only bad point is that
it
likes to snag on everything. If you insist on using wire, I suggest
that
you invest in a high speed cutter. They spin three inch abrasive disks
at
20,000 rpm, and work much quicker than wire cutters or a hack saw.
Spool
the wire around the dowel, and run the tool down the length in a strait
line. This way, you can cut two feet of rings in about a minute. To
use
it, you will need an air compressor with at least a 4 gallon tank, cuz
they
use a lot of air. Harbor Freight Tools sells the cut off tool for
under
twenty bucks. Your site looks great, thanks for the ideas, especially
on
using chain mail to extend the protection of a mask.
