In Metal Gear Solid the codec was actually more than useful!
Still don't agree with me? Well, the codec actually helped you throughout the game, not only did the colonel and others help you in times you didn’t know what to do or help you out of a room filling up with gas. The codec actually brought the story together, and helped bring the story to life as well as developing every characters personality and character.
Just think of Metal Gear Solid without a codec. It would just seem like another win back game. Stop the new top-secret weapon from the terrorist and save the world, right? Wrong! Metal Gear Solid isn't only about that. It’s sort of a love story. Snake falls in love with Meryl after few encounters with her and a couple of codec messages; and Otacon falls in love with the deadly Sniper Wolf. Although Otacon isn't able to stop both Snake and Sniper Wolf from killing each other, they where both doing their jobs and Otacon was caught in the middle of it all. Without the codec, it would be tough to learn about the characters.
Sure you know that Snake is a strong soldier with an extreme expertise at stealth that can take out a Tank, a Hind D that shot down 2 F-16s and a top secret nuclear weapon by himself. You wouldn't know him emotionally and you wouldn't know what kind of guy he is or what he believes in. Same with Otacon sure, you thought he was a nerdy hacker who's obsessed with Japanese anime, was afraid to take out the guard at the cell and cried when Sniper Wolf died. But until the very end it all changed. That last codec call you get from Otacon changes your whole perspective of him, doesn't it? He decides to stay and help by unlocking the security doors for your escape route. He’s decided to be a new man and start a new life. That codec call changed Otacons whole life, his whole personality and his whole character, know what I mean? So next time you play Metal Gear, listen to your codec messages they can be useful!!
