Sprite Life
While a lot of beta testers (I was one) were not impressed with this game or the style, I found it to have a lot of charm and it is a very innovative virtual pet game. In this game, you view a large 3D valley (which looks kinda like a golf course) as a 1st person entity that can pick up objects, jump, swim, and interact with your 3D pets. The pets themselves are not as artistically pleasing as many other virtual pets, but for 3D creatures, they are okay. The beta version contained only "sprites" (monkey-like creatures), but cats and dogs were added in the release. The sounds are impressive, and the controls aren't difficult. It is especially neat that the game is full screen with no windows or statistics blocking the view (unless you click on a pet to see their thoughts/needs).
It is the mechanics and concept of this game that I find most attractive. It feels very open, and the pets are autonomous and free to roam, interact with each other, and fulfill their own needs. You can interact using a variety of toys and treats to help meet their needs. You have a certain number of pets, that you pick out yourself from the online adoption center. Each one is unique and grows. This provides a sense of "life" most games simply do not capture. You get the sense that your pets are important and unique. Each pet also has thoughts and need bars, like a tamagotchi-esque pet but quite beyond, so you feel the responsibility of keeping real pets, even though these creatures do not die or require constant attention.
If you are seeking a pet that truly feels like a real pet, this one may be a good pick, especially for younger children, who would certainly enjoy the 3D graphics and will gain a sense of responsibility by seeing their pets' needs. (The downside to this game is the price, which varies depending on the number of pets you have and is a bit steep for this sort of game, especially without a demo to try the game before purchase.)
Likes: Lovely environment. Neat setup. Unique and fairly independent pets.
Dislikes: Animations are a little weird, especially for baby animals, and the kittens and puppies are too small. (Once full grown, they look and act fine.) The 3D look may not appeal to many players. Fairly high price.
