This is the recorded testimony of Heather Ellen Richmond, taken January 17, 2002, San Antonio office.

F. Please state your name for the record.
R. Heather Ellen Richmond.
F. And what is your occupation?
R. I am the assistant principal at Angola Springs High School.
F. How long have you been employed at the school?
R. Seven years, I was a teacher for ten.
F. Where do you currently live?
R. In Angola, about five minutes from the school.
F. In your own words, what happened on the morning of Friday, January 11?
R. I was in early, I always get to school before everyone else because it's so close. I am the girls' basketball coach, so a lot of the time I spend planning the games.

F. What happened during the second lunch block?
R. All the administrators carry walkie-talkies, for emergencies, I had mine when the lunchroom monitor for second block called in the code for a fight in the lunchroom.
F. Was there a fight?
R. No. When I got there the school drug enforcement officer was kneeling over Katie Hazelgrove, she was passed out on the floor. Her shirt was open.
F. What did they say happened?
R. The monitor claims that she had stood up in the lunchroom and tried to pull off her clothing. When several female students tried to stop her, she just collapsed.
F. What happened then?
R. We called her mother and carried her to the nurse's office to lie down. She was asleep for about ten minutes and then sat up. She said, "Jeremy Askew is in the band," and then collapsed again. She was sweating so much that she was soaked.
F. Did she have a fever?
R. No, the nurse checked her, and she seemed fine.
F. What did you do?
R. We went to find Jeremy. He isn't in the same lunch block, so we had to pull him out of Algebra. The teacher said he had been there all period, though. He never left the class.
F. Did he say anything?
R. Not really. He was confused. We all were. A girl like Katie doesn't have much use for a boy like Jeremy. They are like oil and water.
F. Why?
R. Cheerleader and band geek. Come on, you were in high school once, remember? The physics don't change.
F. Did he have a crush on her?
R. Maybe. Who knows what he thought about her? She was popular. I guess, maybe. I don't know.

F. What happened after you brought Askew to the office?
R. Jeremy seemed fine. He was a quiet, good-looking kid if anyone would notice. His brother was the captain of the boy's basketball team a few years ago. They were very different to be brothers. We took Jeremy to see Katie in the nurse's office, but...
F. What?
R. Well, the closer we got to that office, the more anxious Jeremy became. He was sweating, and very jumpy. He stopped at every water fountain between the offices. When we reached the door, he turned and said "Katherine Hazelgrove plays varsity field hockey," and he walked in. His hands were shaking, like he was very excited or nervous.
F. Then what happened?
R. When he saw her lying there, he began to pace around the room, wringing his hands and muttering. I told him to stop, but he didn't hear me.
F. He wasn't listening to you?
R. No. He didn't hear me. When I put my hand on his arm, he jumped and stared at me like I had just appeared out of nowhere.
F. Then what?
R. Katie started moaning, like she was having a dream. Officer Tackt asked Jeremy if he was taking drugs. Jeremy said "Officer Tackt is impotent. Say no to drugs." Tackt was angry and tried to grab Jeremy by the arm. He...
F. What?
R. He... I... There was a moment when Jeremy looked at him and smiled. He...
F. ?
R. He... picked up a pen off the nurse's desk and stabbed Officer Tackt in the throat. He looked very scared and he just... died... right there. Blood was all over Jeremy's hand, but he never moved, never even blinked. The nurse panicked and tried to pick up the phone to call for help. Jeremy turned and pulled the pen out of Officer Tackt's throat. He dropped, and Jeremy stabbed the nurse's hand, all the way through her whole hand and into the top of the desk. She was a substitute. I don't know her name, but she screamed and screamed. He said "Katherine Hazelgrove lives in Angola Springs, Texas, and her father is dead." He took Officer Tackt's gun and... I'm sorry, but I was scared. I... ran away. I was scared, and I left that nurse there. She was screaming. I-I'm sorry she... There was blood, and I was... She... I think he killed her. I'm sorry. I don't know.

The rest of her account deals with calling the police and the subsequent arrival of Sheriff's Deputy Anna Harris-Fuller of the Angola Sheriff's Department.
