After such a great season of football, so many people wanted to carry this idea of a deep league into a basketball season that we created this league for the 02-03 season. Originally Ref didn't want to participate, but RFS said he'd be the lead if Ref would assist him. Ref agreed.

Then came the hardest part, finding a web site. The CBS site used for football was great, but for hoops, it didn't offer flexibility in player positions. Finally, Yahoo! expanded their site to allow as many as 20 teams and had the player position flexibility and we jumped on that site.

Yahoo! was very basic, but had some nice features all the same. It's a fantastic site for one-season leagues, but a lot of work was required for Keeper leagues--esp. draft pick trades and subsequent drafts. But the price was right (free).

RFS and Ref had agreed they were going to use a Roto format and keep six (6) players. But, right before we were set to start one manager said he wanted to play but only if it was Head-to-Head (H2H) and we kept nine (9). This manager was the last manager to come in, but we went ahead and asked the league. The response was mixed. Finally, we decided that we were so unique, we might as well try it for a year and see what happened.

The results were bad in the opinion of most. Trading was almost absent and those that were active shuffled their lineup daily. Managers became inactive as they dropped in the standings. Because every week was different, most managers were afraid to trade.

The following year, RFS and Ref asked the league to change to Roto. Most embraced the idea. They also asked to take keepers to six the following year. This was a very popular change. Year two was more sucessful, though tweaks were still needed.

Year three was even more successful. With six keepers and an additional NBA team in Charlotte, activity is at an all-time high. Last year, Twarpy and Guru proposed changes in the draft that helped the league. A Utility spot was added and max games were increased to promote activity and make the best team win instead of the best starters. An additional NBA team. Although tweaks may be necessary down the road, the league is closer to where we had hoped it would be when it was created.
