The meaning of Jin's tattoo

Since many ask me about the meaning of the symbol Jin has on his arm,
named 'tattoo' for convenience, I'll tell you about it.
I don't know.
Whether it has mystical origins or whether it is a symbol of some
religion or cult I can't tell. I don't know whether it represents
anything at all. I haven't seen it anywhere before, neither have I seen
anything like it.
Perhaps its sharp edges represent lightning, since Jin's catch copy is
"Fatal Lightning".
I believe it's a symbol Namco designers thought of, something that
looks cool and gives Jin a tougher look.
If you check the first draft sketch of Jin (copy of it can be found in
the picture gallery), Jin wears a buckle with a skull on his left
shoulder, so possibly Namco wanted Jin to look rough but didn't like
the buckle so they replaced it with this sign.
If it is a tattoo, then there is the question of why Jin got it on him,
provided that he _chose_ to get it - tattoos hold special meaning for
those who have them. In the PSX intro of Tekken3, Jin is seen
clutching his arm where the tattoo ignites and then he looks up to see
a spectre. Some say this is the Devil and has marked Jin with that
sign.
To me, the apparition doesn't look much like the Devil (at least not
Tekken's devil) and it could well be that the symbol was already there
and suddenly it went ablaze.
