THE WAR OF FATE

Part Two: The Dark Citadel

Chapter Two: A Futile Military Strike

The maser tanks rolled along, the sound of crunching gravel and the rotation of their treads marking their passage.  Just meters away from Bagan, the battalion halted their movement and raised their laser weaponry at a fifty-degree angle.  "Prepare to fire," came the order from the lead tank.

Bagan roared again in defiance of the flying pests.  The four that remained circled him, waiting for an opportunity to strike.  Bagan swatted at the fighter jets as a cat would its prey.  Suddenly he lunged at one of them and bit right through its wing.  "I'm hit!" came the scream over the radio, and the fighter crashed to the ground and exploded.  "Fire!" came the order from the maser tanks, and they shot their laser beams at Bagan.  The blasts of pure energy seemed to be absorbed by Bagan's tough hide.  He roared and swung his tail, knocking a building over onto the battalion.  Glass and concrete crashed to the ground, crushing an entire row of tanks.  The remaining tanks retreated and regrouped.

"So he generates a force field.  Hmmm.  How are we gonna get around that?" Fudge asked.  G64 rubbed his chin.  "Well, it seems like Bagan controls that force field mentally.  If we could distract him, it might be possible to get through."  UG90 looked up from the table he leaned upon.  A metal device was stretched out over the table.  "I've done it!"  The others looked at him with surprise.  "What the hell are you talking about, kid?" GWB said.  UG90 rolled his eyes.  "Well, if you gave me a chance to explain myself, I'd tell you.  I've developed a glider.  One that will let the user control its flight simply by thought.  Isn't that incredible?"

"Uh, that's great," said Deathwing as he turned back to the window.  Shadow walked over to the younger agent.  "Don't worry about what they think.  Everything is done for a reason.  Fate has preordained it.  I'm sure your glider will come in handy at some point in time."  UG90 smiled at Shadow.  "Thanks.  You know something, I think you're right," he said and went back to work on the glider.

Black16's eyes went wide as though he had just received a message.  "I just realized that I have some loose ends to tie up.  Now, if you'll excuse me," he said, and then disappeared into thin air.  The agents looked around, unsure of what just happened.  "I hate when he does that," GWB said as he crossed his arms and looked out the window at the one-sided battle waged in Beijing.

Bagan fired another beam of energy from his mouth, obliterating yet another jet.  "Red 5, this is Red Leader.  Retreat, I repeat, retreat.  Over," said one of the remaining two jets.  "And let this beast destroy our city?!  Never!" came the reply.  Red 5 fired his remaining missiles at Bagan's back, the projectiles exploding shortly before they reached their target.

A wave of tanks rumbled through the broken streets.  It seemed like Beijing's entire military might had arrived, ready to destroy this new threat.  Bagan looked at his opposition and almost seemed to smile at them as he bared his teeth, eager for destruction.  The tanks circled Bagan and an eerie calm settled over the city.  Suddenly they fired in unison, the sound of tank shells and explosives rocking the very air itself.  Bagan disappeared in a cloud of smoke and fire as the tanks continued their assault.  The maser tanks followed suit, as did a second squadron of jets.  In a matter of minutes, the military stopped firing.  The only sounds that could be heard were the scream of the jets as they flew in a circle around a cloud of billowing smoke.
