THE WAR OF FATE

Part Two: The Dark Citadel

Chapter Three: The Ultimate Weapon

The smoke dissipated into the clouds, revealing the enormous form of Bagan, untouched by the measly human weapons.  General Takawa's jaw dropped as he witnessed the raw power of Bagan from his underground bunker.  "Incredible," he whispered.  "This creature is more powerful than anything I could ever imagine."  Takawa turned to the computer engineer next to him.  "Call back the troops.  It seems my old friend Rampage was right.  This is beyond us."  The engineer nodded and turned back to his station.

"Sir!" cried an engineer from the front row of computer terminals.  "Something is happening out there.  We're detecting massive power levels emanating from the beast!"  Takawa stood up from his seat, knocking over his swiveling chair in the process.  "What?  How is that possible?!"  He looked up at the large monitor.  Bagan seemed to vibrate, his eyes closed in deep thought.  Suddenly, the monster let loose a glass-shattering roar as a pair of enormous bat-like wings sprouted from his back.

Holding his arms at his sides, Bagan took off like a rocket into the sky above Beijing.  Red 5 followed, intent on destroying the kaiju.  "You're mine, you son of a bitch!" the pilot yelled as he strained under the pressure, heading higher and higher in pursuit.

Samrong stared out the window.  He had been silent for the past fifteen minutes.  Without a second thought, he turned around.  "We don't have much time.  Move us 20 miles South."  Dracatron raised his eyebrows.  "But sir, that will take us farther away from the city.  May I ask why?"  Samrong walked past Dracatron, heading for the door.  "It will take us out of the blast range."

"Hey guys!  The Garula is moving away from the city!  Something isn't right,' shouted Ness.  G64 stared at Bagan's wanton destruction for a split second.  "Oh no!  Quick!  Follow them!  I've got a bad feeling about this!"  The Green Jester stopped hovering and turned in the opposite direction, heading towards the Garula.

-----------------------

Bagan stopped at an incredibly high altitude.  The city looked like a model in Bagan's eyes.  It was time.

The great beast opened his mouth as he looked down upon Beijing.  His eyes glowed red as a swirl of pure white energy appeared at the back of his throat.  The energy grew in size and strength until it enveloped Bagan's maw.  The cloud cover above the city spread apart.  What happened next took only a few seconds, but it seemed like an eternity for a select few.  It would be remembered for centuries as the Day of Annihilation.

The beam of energy spewed forth in a concentrated area like a spotlight.  The unfortunate soul under that particular spotlight was Red 5.  The pilot was heading straight into the beam and, unwittingly, to his doom.  Before he could react, Red 5 felt the beam engulf his fighter jet.  For a moment, all was calm.  Then the pain and horror settled in.

First to go was his skin.  The horrified pilot looked down at his hands as the skin literally disintegrated before his eyes.  He tried to scream, but his tongue had also turned to dust.  The last thing the unfortunate pilot saw was his heart, free of the confines of his mortal flesh, explode in a shower of blood and muscle.

Takawa stared in awe as the beam struck the earth.  An incredible silence commanded the attention of all that watched the event pass.  Suddenly a ripple of energy spread out in a circular pattern, obliterating the landscape.  Whole buildings were torn apart and disintegrated before the rubble could hit the ground.  The wave of energy spread to the very edge of the city, destroying everything.  Suddenly the bunker shook violently and the ceiling collapsed, taking Takawa and everyone else with it.

At that very moment, even the elder god Elohem felt the agony and the screams of thousands of innocent people as their lives were snuffed out in the blink of an eye.
