THE WAR OF FATE

Part Two: The Dark Citadel

Chapter Five: Dark Tower Reborn

The agents huddled behind a ridge overlooking the canyon clearing.  G64 looked through his binoculars at the gathering in the distance.  "They're all there," he said as he handed the binoculars over to GWB.  "You guys think we can take them?" GWB replied as he handed the binoculars to Fudge.  "I don't know," Fudge answered.  "There's a multitude of guards with them."  He handed the binoculars to Deathwing.  G64 wiped the sweat from his brow.  "I say we take a chance.  If Samrong gets that Dark Citadel, it could all be over."  The other agents nodded in unison.  They hopped over the ridge and cautiously made their way towards the Garai Tai.

Bagan roared a challenge into the air.  He looked around, hoping for a response.  None came.  The entire area was deserted, devoid of life.  In anger, Bagan swung his tail and knocked over a mountain of rubble.  The ground shuddered as the avalanche cascaded down the mountain.  A cloud of dust flew into the air.  A flock of birds soared overhead.  Bagan was bored.  He needed a challenge.  Slowly the giant lay on the ground and drifted off to sleep.

"The time has come, my brothers," Samrong said, with his arms up in the air.  "The world belongs to us!"  His eyes flashed red as the ground shook beneath him.  The spire seemed to vibrate in the ground.  Suddenly, the earth shook and cracked like glass, forcing everyone to run for cover.  Samrong stood his ground as the spire broke the surface, a rising relic of a long-dead civilization.

The spire was three meters long, black as obsidian.  The roof of the tower followed, pyramid-shaped and made of marble.  A ten-meter section followed, shaped like a cube with windows on each side.  Ten more similar sections rose from the ground afterward like a funeral procession.  Long spikes on each side that jutted out at a forty-five degree angle separated each section.  The last section to appear was by far the longest, measuring at fifteen meters tall.  It had no windows, but a large door adorned one side, complete with the Bagan skull symbol in the center of the wooden entrance.

The ground stopped rumbling once the tower had finished reappearing.  The Garai Tai came out of their hiding places as Samrong put his arms down.  A slow, maniacal laugh left his mouth as his men slowly edged toward the tower.  "Now we wait for tonight's eclipse.  That is when I will do what my father could not!  I will open the Abyss and free Levah from his prison, and I will be praised as a god!  The universe will tremble before me!"  As Samrong made this last statement, his voice changed to a deep growl that surprised everyone who listened in, including himself.

"That's it!  We end this now!" G64 said to the others as they made their way to the Dark Citadel, still remaining out of sight.  "So that was his plan all along!  He wants to free his god from the Abyss!" GWB said with astonishment.  He took out his Desert Eagles and flipped them in his hands.  "Let's give those demons a welcome they won't soon forget!" he said slyly.
