Earth
Day, Balboa Park
April 22, 2001
Balboa
Park was the perfect setting for another Earth Day. The festivities
at the Park have improved this year, 2001 being no exception.
The buildings and works of art at the Prado framed the avenues
of booths and performers.
This
year I was accompanied by my dad and my dog, Chyna. Here she is,
chillin like a villain:
If
Earth Day had a lot of one thing, it was music. That's not bad,
it's just that I'm a little sad that I didn't get to sit and listen
to all of it as long as I wanted to.
What
made it a bit uncomfortable was the amount of different religions
in one park. There was everything from the Church of Open Air
to the Christian extremists protesting. It was all a great experience.
Plus I made out with some informational pamphlets and some Hindu
stickers.
The
nature stuff wasn't neglected! People talked about saving electricity,
water, and gas. There were booths on endangered species,
poachers,
animal endangerment -- all that stuff. Plus, some really cool
pet clubs like the Parrot Society.
Earth
Day at Balboa was mighty sprifty this year. I recieved a lot of
free flyers and stickers (which probably killed a lot of trees
-- for a good cause, right?), as well as a heads-up on some political
websites (did you know that making one computer chip creates waste
10 times its size?). All-in-all it was just another hypocritical
day.
Good
fun, though!
