No one is really sure who Homer was, or whether he was even a he, but perhaps a she or multiple hes. Or multiple shes. Or a gold statue that one day started spouting poetry. We just don't know. We simply call the author (authors?) of the infamous Iliad and Odyssey Homer because that is the name of the character that narrates the stories. There are many theories as to who and what Homer was, some are generally accepted as true while others touch a bit on the extreme.
It is commonly believed that Homer lived around the time of the Battle of Troy. It is not-so-commonly believed (though one scholar thinks it may be true) that Homer’s secret identity is that of King Solomon. This theory originates from the realization that “Homer” spelled backwards and read in Hebrew spells a variation of the name Solomon.
What we’re really trying to say here is that no one, not even genius scholars holed up in a dark room lit only by the glare of their computers, really knows who Homer is. It’s simply one of history’s great mysteries, and it is most likely destined to stay that way for at least a little while longer.
