13 Darby Extension

The track from Yeadon loop to Darby loop (and vice versa) is amongst the most interesting street running track left in Philadelphia. One bright January day, a now retired SEPTA operator was kind enough to stop the trolley for me at various points as he ran back to the depot. Trolley 9076 has a unique paint scheme amongst the Kawasaki fleet. The number 76 is a big deal in Philly. Here the car is Darby bound on 10th at Summit

After Chester Ave ends at Cedar, the track splits and runs to Darby via 10th street and from Darby via 9th. There is a steep grade extending up from Main street Darby that poses quite a challenge for the cars. This view is also Darby bound on 10th midblock. The orange truck behind the trolley is a SEPTA vehicle used to sweep out the track switches.

Looking north from Wycombe, a "trolley stop sign" is on the left. This is odd because on many parts of the trolley network the stops are noted with the regular SEPTA bus decals and the route name. Only in a few places are there the green signs that note the trolley stop. It is also puzzling since no regular service is provided here. This trackage is only used for 13 cars coming in and out of service from Elmwood Depot. There is nothing on the sign or the post that informs passengers that there is no service here most of the day

Turning from 10th on to Main street, a beautiful 18th century farmhouse stands behind the car. Of note on Main street, the trolley tracks straddle the yellow median line for some reason instead of staying in the correct lane. This awkward arrangement casues headaches for the trolley operators and the motorists, who seem to have heavy feet in this part of town.

On Main street, Darby loop is just to the right of the picture. It is no longer possible to enter Darby loop from Main street, though the tracks are still visible. At one time the 62 used these tracks to make the short trip between Yeadon and Darby loops. The track the 62 used to enter Darby loop is still visible, though no longer operable. Some of the catenary is also up. Once in Darby loop the 62 went about 100 feet north and then out to 9th street skirting a backyard. Once on 9th, it joined the track that is still used by 13 cars going into service on Chester.

Here's a nice shot of what's missing. When the some route 13 cars used to make return trips between Darby and Center City, they turned from eastbound Main St into the loop northbound. Here 2171 enters the terminal. The car received a General Overhaul in 1984 and lasted until the 15, 23 and 56 lines were bused in 1992 That informantion was found in the car by car roster on Philadelphia Trolley Tracks. This shot was an ebay purchase and the photographer is unknown.
