The late Darcy Clay was (and still is) one of New Zealand’s most unique and
impressive musicians of all time. "Brilliant, funny and a little messy." is a message
found in the 'Songs For Beethoven' semi-album, which I think sums both him and his
music up quite nicely.
Darcy Clay was born as Daniel Bolton. For the most part of his youth Darcy lived in Birkenhead, as well as spending about 2 years over seas in Atlanta and Australia. Darcy's first and only single 'Jesus I Was Evil' quickly became a massive success, reaching number 5 on the NZ charts in only two weeks. This ain't bad, considering it was recorded in his room on a 4-track (!) Tragically in 1998 Darcy shot himself and was found dead at his girlfriends place. He was found shortly before he was to take the stage for an anti-suicide concert. Darcy died having only played 5 gigs, his last in 1998 supporting Blur. His performance was recorded and released on the 'Songs For Beethoven' album. |
