Music

Still more important than anything else.

PJ Harvey

General: PJ Harvey is sort of a band, sort of a singer. The name comes from the singer, Polly Jean Harvey. I know that she is the one who writes the music and sings it, and plays some of the instruments. All of the magazine articles I've read about PJ Harvey only interview Polly, but refer to both her and the band as PJ Harvey. I'ts confusing. Anyway, PJ Harvey's music is definitly not in keeping with the norm. I'ts a bit abstract, but not so abstract it's hard too listen to. I fell in love with it right away, but I believe for some it might be an aquired taste.
You might have heard: C'mon Billy, Good Fortune, Meet Ze Monsta, Is This Desire, Rid of Me
Quote: "Dunk you - under - deep salt - water, Bring me - lover - all your - power, I'll be - no hell -out of - your spell, Over - under - die of - pleasure"
Era: 90's to present.
Essential Album: To Bring You My Love
Cool Link: A Doomed Army (Part of it is in French, but there is some English).

Silverchair

General: Silverchair is an Australian band made up of Benjamin Gillies, Daniel Johns, and Chris Joannou. Once the band members got arrested for underage drinking, but the police cheif's daughter was a big fan and she made her dad let them go. Just an interesting little story to fill up space. I'm not good at describing bands, as you may have already noticed. Once again the same old stuff, they're really good, check them out, yadda yadda yadda...
You might have heard: Tommorow, Isreal's Son, Freak, Anthem for the Year 2000, Ana's Song (Open Fire).
Quote: "Teenyboppers are mental." -Ben Gillies
Era: mid 90's to present.
Essential Album: Frogstomp
Cool Link: Silverfreak's Lair

Nirvana

General: Nirvana, as you probably know, was Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. Ok, Nirvana was a wonderful wonderful wonderful band and I love their music very much. However I don't think (and I'm not alone in this) that they wouldn't have been so revered and considered so legendary had Kurt Cobain not died when he did, under the circumstances that he did. I'ts that whole JFK thing.
You might have heard: Smells Like Teen Spririt, Rape Me, Heart Shaped Box, Aneurysm, In Bloom, Come As You Are.
Quote: "My heart is broke, But I have some glue, Help me inhale, And mend it with you, We'll float around, And hang out on clouds"- Kurt Cobain from the song, 'Dumb'.
Era: very late 80's to mid 90's.
Essential Album: In Utero
Cool Link: The Internet Nirvana Fan Club (I'ts no longer a club, but it's still a very cool site with lots of stuff).

The Who

General: The Who are one of the greatest classic rock bands ever as far as I'm concernd. They were Keith Moon (Moon the Loon), Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle. The Who's trademark stage antics came into being when they were playing at a cafe with a low ceiling. During the gig Pete Townshend was jumping, and his guitar neck hit the ceiling and broke off. He was very upset, this was his favorite guitar, so he banged what was left of it into the speakers and into the ground. When the performance was over, his manager said he had to do that every performance from now on because the crowd loved it. He broke his guitar at every concert for the next 5 years. On another note, David Bowie recently did a cover of their song Pictures of Lily.
You might have heard: I Can See For Miles, My Generation, Pinball Wizard, Baba O'Riley, Who Are You, Magic Bus, I Can't Explain, Anyway Anyhow Anywhere, The Seeker.
Quote: "People try to put us d-down (Talkin' 'bout my generation), Just because we g-g-get around (Talkin' 'bout my generation), Things they do look awful c-c-cold (Talkin' 'bout my generation), Yeah, I hope I die before I get old (Talkin' 'bout my generation) "- Roger Daltry, from the song 'My Generation'.
Era: Mid 60's to early 80's.
Essential Album: My Generation- The Very Best of The Who
Cool Link: The Who: Maximum R &B

Credence Clearwater Revival

General: CCR was John Fogerty, his brother Tom Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook. The band was formed in late 1967 out of their previous band The Golliwogs. Tensions grew as John Fogerty took control of the group. In 1971 Tom left the group angry at his brother. The band disbanded in late 1972. The divide between John Fogerty and the rest of the band and the record company grew through a series of legal battles over copy right infringment. Recently, the band minus John (and minus Tom who died in 1990) regrouped to form Credence Clearwater Revisited. However, as they suck without John, I recomend you instead buy John's solo album Blue Moon Swamp, or just stick with the old stuff.
You might have heard: Suzie Q, I Put A Spell On You, Heard It Through the Grape Vine, Run Through the Jungle, Bad Moon Rising, Have You Ever Seen the Rain.
Quote: "Hope you got your things together. Hope you are quite prepared to die. Looks like we're in for nasty weather. One eye is taken for an eye."- John Fogerty, from the song 'Bad Moon Rising'.
Era: mid 60's to early 80's
Essential Album: Vol. 1 Greatest Hits

Tom Petty

General: Tom Petty is both a solo singer, and the lead singer of the Heart Breakers. Full Moon Fever is my favorite Tom Petty Album, and one of my all time favorite albums by anybody. It's one of those things that is just simply wonderful. Another great thing about Tom is his awesome videos. He dances with a dead Kim Bassinger in Mary Jane's Last Dance, plays the mad hatter and eats Alice in the video for Don't Come Around Here No More, and is in the middle of a weird revolving set in You Don't Know How It Feels.
You might have heard: Mary Jane's Last Dance, Free Fallin', Runnin' Down a Dream, Refugee, You Don't Know How It Feels, Stop Dragging My heart Around, Into the Great Wide Open
Quote: "Well the man out to end us had a hurricane business, He'd raise them from babies all by himself"- from the song, 'A Mind With A Heart of I'ts Own'
Era: Mid 70's to present.
Essential Album: Full Moon Fever
Cool Link: Official Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker's Page (Hell, check out this page even if you don't like them just because it looks so cool once you're inside the lounge!)

Hole

General: Hole is the infamous Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson, Melissa Auf Der Maur, and Samantha Maloney. Former band members have included Kristen Pfaff, Jill Emery, Patty Schemel, Caroline Rue and Leslie Hardie. I don't have much to say other than they are pretty cool, and you should go buy 'Live Through This'.
You might have heard: Miss World, Doll Parts, Celebrity Skin, Malibu, Pretty On The Inside, Violet.
Quote: "Hold you close like we both died, My ever-present suicide, My stupid fuck, my blushing bride, Oh tear my heart out, tear my heart out"- Courtney Love from the song, 'She Walks On Me'
Era: very late 80's to present.
Essential Album: Live Through This

Queen

General: Queen is seriously one of the coolest bands ever. If you don't like queen, there is something very very wrong with you. Want to know why I hate Vanilla Ice? In 1981 David Bowie wrote and sung a song with Queen titled Under Pressure. In the early 90's Vanilla Ice stole the song and rapped over it. Then he went on national TV and lied about stealing it, swearing that the song was different because the Queen/Bowie version went quote, "de de de de de de de", while his version went quote, "de de de de de de de ping". That bastard. Queen's career was over in 1991 when the lead singer Freddie Mercury (one of the greatest frontmen of all time) ) tragically died of AIDS. He is survived by his fellow bandmates Brian May, Roger Taylor, John Deacon.
You might have heard: Bohemian Rapsody, Fat Bottom Girls, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, Another One Bites the Dust, Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Under Pressure, Who Wants to Live Forever.
Quote: "The show must go on The show must go on - yeah Ooh inside my heart is breaking My make-up may be flaking But my smile still stays on "- Freddie Mercury, from the song 'The Show Must Go On'.
Era: early 70's to very early 90's.
Essential Album: Classic Queen
Cool Link: The Queen's Domain.

Marilyn Manson

General: What can I say, the guy's awesome. He even did a Bowie cover. He did a cover of "Golden Years" with The Chemical Brothers (The Dust Brothers, whatever) for the "Dead Man On Campus" soundtrack. The current band members are Manson himself, Twiggy Ramirez, Pogo (Madonna Wayne-Gacy), Ginger Fish, and John 5. Former members include Daisy Berkowitz, Zim Zum, Sara Lee Lucas, Gidget Gein, Olivia Newton Bundy, Zsa Zsa Speck, and, well, a drum machine.
You might have heard: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These), The Beautiful People, The Dope Show, Lunchbox, Antichrist Superstar, Cake and Sodomy, I Don't Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me), Rock is Dead, Coma White, Disposable Teens.
Quote: "I associate God with boring music like Hootie & the Blowfish. In the tradition of Jerry Lee Lewis burning his piano and balling his thirteen-year old cousin, we're what rock 'n' roll's supposed to be." -Marilyn Manson.
Era: very late 80's to present.
Essential Album: Antichrist Superstar
Cool Link: The Antichrist O'Fuck.

Republica

General: I actually don't know much about Republica other than they are British and that I love their first self-titled album. Republica has a unique sound. They have been described as, "a live guitar band with punk strong guitars and dance beats", "Techno Pop Punk Rock", and "A guitar band, with a bit of a pop attitude and dance beats -burnt glamour pop". The band is Tim Dorney (keyboards), Jonny Male (guitars), Pete Riley (drums) and Saffron (vocals) who apparently has no last name. The other guy in the picture is a former band member named Toddy, who doesn't seem to have a last name either.
You might have heard: Ready to Go, Drop Dead Gorgeous
Quote: "I don't get it when people say "Just a pop band", I think being a brilliant pop band is the highest thing you can aspire to. Pop music is something that's both throwaway and something that changes your life. That's what we want to achieve - disposable brilliance."- Saffron
Era: Mid 90's to Present
Essential Album: Republica
Cool Link: Riot in Republica

Tool

General: I SAW TOOL IN CONCERT!!!! Mwhahaha! Tool is Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Adam Jones (guitar), Danny Carey (drums) and Justin Chancellor (bass). Paul D'Amour was the original bassist.
You might have heard: Hush, Prison Sex, Sober, Stinkfist, Ænima, Schism.
Quote: "Constant over stimu-lation numbs me, And I wouldn't have, It any other way... Something kinda sad about, The way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything. What became of subtlety?"- Maynard, from the song 'Stinkfist'
Era: Early 90's to Present
Essential Album: Lateralus
Cool Link: The Tool Page

A Perfect Circle

General: I SAW THE LEAD SINGER IN CONCERT! That's because the lead singer of APC if also the lead singer of Tool. And as we know by now, I SAW TOOL IN CONCERT. Even though Maynard is in both bands, APC is not a Tool rip-off. APC is much more melodious than Tool, not to mention the fact they did a cover of a Bowie song (Ashes to Ashes) which Tool has yet to do (the song does not appear on an album, but they played it frequently on tour). A Perfect Circle is Billy Howerdel (Composer and Guitar), Maynard James Keenan (Words and Vocals), Troy Van Leeuwen (Guitar), Paz Lenchantin (Bass and Violin), and Josh Freese (Drums).
You might have heard: 3 Libras, The Hollow, Judith
Quote: "Pray to your christ to your god, never taste of the fruit, never stray never break, never choke on a lie, even though he's the one who did this to you, never thought to question why "- Maynard, from the song 'Judith'
Era: Late 90's to Present
Essential Album: Mer de Noms
Cool Link: apc.org

Elvis Presley

General: Those 14 year old screaming N*Sync fans on TRL annoy the shit out of me, but I know I would have been one of those psychotic teenage girls passing out in the front row of an Elvis concert if I had been alive back then. They don't call him the King for nothing.
You might have heard: Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog, Don't Be Cruel, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, All Shook Up
Quote: "I have not sold my soul to the devil. It's only music!"
Era: mid 50's to early 70's
Essential Album: Number One Hits
Cool Link: Sumer's Elvis Aaron Presley Page

The Pretenders

General: The Pretender's are totally awesome, Last of the Independents is one of my favorite albums of all time, and Chrissie Hynde is by far the coolest chick in all of rock 'n' roll, no joke. The Pretenders' line-up has changed frequently over the years, the current one being the ever-present Chrissie Hynde (YAY!), Adam Seymour, Martin Chambers, Tom Kelly, and Andy Duncan. I love Chrisse Hynde. She is so damn cool!
You might have heard: I'll Stand By You, I'm Special, Don't Get Me Wrong, Back On The Chain Gang
Quote: "Don't think that sticking your boobs out and trying to look fuckable will help. Remember your in a rock and roll band. It's not 'fuck me', it's 'fuck you'!" -Chrissie Hynde's advice to chick rockers.
Era: late 70's to present
Essential Album: Last of the Independents

Bon Jovi

General: I really like Bon Jovi, and I think they are often underrated just because people can't get past their hair. There is talent under all that hairspray. Actually their hair has calmed down during the last decade, but those 80's videos will haunt them indefinitly. My favorite albums are from the early 90's- Keep the Faith ('92), Crossroads('94), and These Days('95)- definitly their best stuff. Bon Jovi is Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Tico Torres and David Bryan. Before Bon Jovi was a house-hold name, Jon worked a job at a recording studio where he once met David Bowie.
You might have heard: Runaway, Shot Through the Heart, In and Out Of Love, Wanted Dead or Alive, Livin' on a Prayer, Bed of Roses, Bad Medicine, This Ain't a Love Song, It's my life.
Quote: "I can't write a love song the way I feel today, I can't sing no song of hope I've got nothing to say, Life is feeling kind of strange, it's strange enough these days, I send this song to you, whoever you are, As my guitar lies bleeding in my arms"- Jon Bon Jovi from the song, 'My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms'
Era: early 80's to present
Essential Album: Keep the Faith
Cool Link: Let it Rock

The B52's

General: The B52's are Kate Pierson (vocals/keyboard), Fred Schneider (vocals/toy piano), Kieth Strickland (guitars/keyboard), Cindy Wilson (Vocals/Percussion), and formerly Ricky Wilson (guitar/vocals - he's deceased). "I don't know what there is to say about them except that they are wonderful" -my mom, when asked what I should say about them here. They play weird dance music about aliens and baking cakes and going back in time and potatoes. Cindy and Kate's beehive hairdoos have become a B52 trademark.
You might have heard: 52 Girls, Rock Lobster, Lava, Love Shack, Roam, Private Idaho, Party Out of Bounds
Quote: "Hello, I'm Cindy, I'm a Pisces And I like chihuahuas and Chinese noodles"- Cindy Wilson, from the song 'Song for a Future Generation'
Era: late 70's to present
Essential Album: Cosmic Thing
Cool Link: The B52's Online

The Dandy Warhols

General: The Dandy Warhols are seriously like no other band I have heard. They play really great electronic influenced rock that is often weird, but easy to listen to. They are definintly one of my favorite bands. The Dandys are Peter Holmstrom on guitar, Courtney Taylor (who is actually a guy) with lead vocals and guitar, Zia McCabe on the Korg keyboard bass, and Brent DeBoer on the drums.
You might have heard: T.V. Theme Song, Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Boys Better, Bohemian Like You.
Quote: "You never thought you'd get addicted, Just be cooler in an obvious way. I could say, Shouldn't you have got a couple piercings and decided maybe that you were gay." - Courtney Taylor, from the song 'Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth'
Era: mid 90's to present
Essential Album: The Dandy Warhols Come Down
Cool Link: Hooray for the Dandy Warhols!

Harvey Danger

General: Harvey Danger was born in Seattle, Washington in 1992, and consists of Aaron Huffman, Jeff J. Lin, Sean Nelson, and Evan Sult. When I bought 'The King James Version' I had only hear one song off the album (Authenticity), but was so impressed with it, and the one other HD song I had heard (Flagpole Sitta), I decided to take a chance and buy the ablum. I was rewarded with one of the most intelligent, well-made records I have heard in a long time. I figured it would be good, but I had no idea how good. I'm not sure how to label the band, so I'll just go with the generic, totally nospecific terms 'rock' and 'pop' to give you an idea. If you have at least half a brain you will enjoy Harvey Danger.
You might have heard: Flagpole Sitta, Wrecking Ball, Authenticity, Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Quote: "I had a lovely brunch with Jesus Christ. He said, 'two words about inanity: fundamental christianity.' The food was very nice, but then he had to go and die for my sins and stick my ass with the check"- Sean C. Nelson, from the song 'meetings with remarkable men (show me the hero)'
Era: early 90's to present
Essential Album: The King James Version
Cool Link: Harvey Danger

By the way, I credited all the quotes to the people who actually spoke them. So in the case of a song quote, the person singing it is not necissarily the person who wrote it. For example, on this page there is a Who quote from My Generation; although Roger Daltrey sung it, Pete Townshend actually wrote it.

screw it
