Refugee Hair

mop of hair
lounging on my head
with nothing more
constructive to do than
make me look like a dirty
immigrant
who just arrived on Ellis Island,
Italian & crazy & looking
for conditioner

Pray Tell, Dear Muse

To where does your mind wander, my sweet muse
As you glide yonder vacuum o’er the rug?
Your eyes are hidden by the curlicues
Of hair, but still I see your face is smug.
What secret passions are concealed inside
The song you sing (an absent-minded tune)?
Perhaps you are a Cinderella bride:
You pray that your Prince Charming will come soon
To take you to his castle in the sky
Away from this droll servant’s life you lead.
You can kiss your menial work good-bye
For, my sweet muse, I am the man you need.
With but one kiss your dreams shall all come true.
My castle waits, dear; no more chores for you.

The title and last line come from the song "Uninvited" by Alanis Morissette

Uninvited

we sit
next to a trash can
behind a concrete column
in two rows
of fixed positions
talking of sex, school, and sin
laughing away the glares
of the contemptuously popular
who want nothing of us
except eventual assimilation
but we refuse to conform
so here we are
shipwrecked at the lunch table
of misfit girls
never to be welcomed
to the counter culture
a seemingly unfortunate slight

"Baltimore Winter"

It's cold again in Baltimore
As I lay in my bed
Waiting to get warm
I prod my belly button
With an ice-cold fingertip
It's nights like these
That make me dream
Of Maui
