(Thanks for this picture, Amy! Good God, this isn't right...I realize it has nada to do with concerts, but too bad! Mmm, hello hotties.)
And that's funny because it's an 'NSync song on a Backstreet page, ya get it? Yeah, anyway, so February 15 - a day that will live in imfamy...y'know, with all those days that are living in imfamy. It was my fifth Backstreet-related show (four plus Johnny Hot-as-hell-your-name-is-whatever-you-want-it-to-be-baby), and it was a good one. Not "oh my gawd this was the best concert of all time!!!", but enjoyable. Here is a breakdown...
The Arena
I don't think I'm wandering too far out on a limb by saying that the Pontiac Silverdome is crap. I hate it, it's way too big, and the people that work there are pretty close to clueless. I did, however, sneak an entire backpack containing cameras and Happy Meal toys (to throw randomly into the audience), past a good 20-25 guards with absolutely no questions asked and split a couple beers with Dannie, so I guess that's good. Anyway, they're unorganized as hell and I hate them. Well, it. I hate the Silverdome. Next...
The Opening Acts
Krystal (however you spell it), was pretty cool. Not at all a typical-looking or -acting pop singer girl - nice job branching out, Boys (too bad the same cannot be said for girls nearer and dearer to your hearts...oh wait, I didn't say that). She had a cool voice and she liked to headbang. I think she's like an all-Christian artist, which narrows her market, but she managed the stage well and overall I enjoyed her.
Destiny's Child was...Destiny's Child. They were their radio-rrific selves. I will tell you this - it is clear as day seeing them live just how reduced to back-up singers Michelle and Kelly are. I was ready to knock Beyonce over, prancing all over the stage like that. Someone has got to get those girls together with the Supremes and warn them what's going to happen...
And now, what you've all been waiting for...
The Fans
There's not a whole lot new to say here because if you've ever been to a Backstreet show you've seen the fans in all their glory. There was the usual assortment of Ho's (put some clothes on!), Wanna-Be Ho's (you definitely need to put some clothes on, you're freaking 12!), the Cardinal-Sin Committers (wearing merchandise to a show is one of my biggest pet peeves, perhaps of all time), the Homemade CSCs (those people'll use everything from electrical tape to t-shirt paint), and a variety of other smaller categories. We took a few pictures of our favorites so stay tuned for that. Getting out of the Silverdome with these people was a pain in the ass, too, but Dannie gave them all what-for loudly and repeatedly so it was OK.
Ha! OK, now what you've all been waiting for...
The Boys
Well, what can I say? I love them, they put on a hell of a show. Not all that fond of the cheesy scenery crap on the big screen, I thought they should have had just the guys up there because the screens on the sides were really hard to see (and whatever was up with the video playing during "The Answer To Our Life"? I know that the guys are just making an earnest attempt at trying to make this world a better place, but why are they starting with the logging industry? We need wood). I did thoroughly enjoy the costume-change skit, that was pretty awesome, I just wish I would have been able to hear it. Their stage set-up was great in terms of the walkway (Dannie and I are so jealous of those girls), but we missed the round set-up too. Oh well. Choice of songs was cool, we were thrilled to hear our song, "Beautiful" (what we are choosing to call "What Makes You Blah Blah Blah", aka the Wal-Mart Song), and "If You Stay" (I was freaking out!). A lot of early stuff was left out but I guess that happens. The guys seemed to actually be having fun, which was nice to see. They have taken a hint from 'NSync as far as rhinestone-y goodness goes, but their costumes are so, so much better. They sounded good too (what I could hear, at least), so...yeah. Here are a few individual thoughts on the guys...
- Nick Wow. OK, I am not a Nick fan, but I gotta give the kid this - he has stage presence and he looked like he was having a great time. I think he's really come into his own. He sounded great and looked...eh, so-so. Sometimes good, other times shady. He still has a way better build that almost all the 'NSyncers, though, easily...
- AJ It was all about AJ. As usual he was wonderful...what can you say about AJ? Oh, just this - AJ, honey, that hair looked stupid on Howard and it looks stupid on you. But I still love you. 'K. That's all.
- Brian Brian has developed a much better presence too. He was cute as all get-out dancing around. Dannie snapped many a picture and gushed. It saddened me all over again that he's married (ick). This is too bad because he and Dannie's children would be so cute they'd blow your mind.
- Kevin My God, when did this man go from rapist-y to hot again? I was lusting for Kevin in unholy ways last night and I am not afraid to admit it. I did not want him to go in that box, and when he asked in that deep voice, teasingly looking out from behind that hair...no! Howie's my favorite, Howie! Um, where was I...so yeah, Kevin was attractive, I enjoyed him. I can stay business-like...about...it...that body...NO! I love Howie!!!
- Howie I feel guilty now. No, Howard is still and will always be my favorite. He was wonderful, so cute and sweet, sounded wonderful (singing my song...and my other song...). I liked that hat thing he sported towards the end, definitely enjoyed that. I love him, what more can I say?
Closing Thoughts
* What ever happened with the original band?
* Please God, tell me this is the last arena show.
* Thirty bucks for a laminate? After a $60 ticket? Get real.
* Fans piss me off.
* The Boys can still rock.
* Why no "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming"?
* I love them.
