Drum roll.......
I like to gamble with my career. Visiting the USA was, in the beginning, a
gamble. It turned out I won the jackpot. When I first arrived in New York, I
was to meet my manager, Kelley Smith, for the first time. Not realizing that
I was now on a domestic flight having traveled via LA I walked off the plane
heading straight to my luggage pick up before having to head through
customs. This mistake caused me to walk right passed my future manager,
business partner and friend. Kelley, I might add, had never sent a photo =
of
himself but as he whispered 'You're not going to pass me up that easily you
bastard' I turned and knew straight away who it was.
Kelley kept telling me there was a surprise waiting for me outside. When I
walked out of the airport I was blown away to find a white stretched limo
waiting to pick me up. This was the real thing! I jumped in to be greeted by
Jax and Cyn who had come to New York as well. So my first impression of New
York is, stretched white limos, Champagne, beautiful women and a very
hyperactive, thin, blond haired manager.
Kelley and I spent one week in New York. In one week we must have walked
1000miles and jumped into just as many cabs. It was fantastic! Besides the
touristy and social engagements that we both managed to cram in, we both
became acquainted with each others enthusiasm for making our business dreams
come true. I won't bore everyone with details but my first Monday in New
York saw me having brunch with a man called Arthur. Now being a safe gambler
I had set myself one, rather small goal for my trip to USA and that was to
set up a venue for my show Tae Kwon Shakespeare. By the end of brunch this
goal was to my mind achieved. A small win but now I was hooked. Kelley and I
had begun our winning streak.
Kelley and I left New York and flew to Houston to rest for 5 days on his
country property out Cleveland way. This gave us a chance to chat idly, to
space out in front a good movie and to prepare for our road trip in Kelley's
Ford Explorer up to California.
Traveling via Tucson, El Paso and visiting Kelley's relations we finally
made it for the Easter Weekend in LA. Four and half weeks in LA, the most
incredible time of my life. Opportunity on every corner. This place is an
actors dream or as I saw in some cases an actors nightmare. Luckily Kelley
and I work as a team and we were able to play the game our way. Even better
was the fact that LA is largely made up of the vain and image conscious
which made our going very easy. We looked good!
Every day was made up of appointments with directors, actors, producers and
writers who all found it in their wallets to shout 'us' the expensive meal.
I loved every minute of it. Even the martial art dojos I visited were geared
towards entertainment sometimes with hundreds of pictures of the teacher
with Bruce Lee and the like.
Lots of small work came my way and every day was leading to the fact that I
was going to stay in LA. We had spent most of our time living in the
Hollywood Hills and eating out and having interviews in the environs of
Beverley Hills so it was a real blow when the trip was cut short by some
family news that took us back to Texas and I, eventually back to Sydney.
We didn't leave LA without continuing in our successful fashion. My last day
consisted of a film shoot of a fight scene out in the desert. A dry lake bed
in Palm Dale. I can't wait to see the final cut as the location (and the
fight) looked really good. Kelley joined up with me at the end of an
exhausting day with good news from a meeting with Casting Director, Lisa
London. With that we jumped in the car and continued to Las Vegas.
We stayed at Kelley's sisters house in Las Vegas and she took us to see
STORM a big musical and Kelley and I once again proved our winning streak
except this time without using much talent or skill at all and walked out of
Las Vegas with a few more handfuls of quarters.
The drive back was a sensational drive through a part of America that I
think everyone should try and see once in their life time. We visited the
Grand Canyon!
We took route 66 and headed home.
p.s. Oh and I almost forgot Kelley and I had a chance meeting with Daniel
Goddard walking along Hollywood Blvd. I Swear it's the truth. Pure chance
There are so many other chance meetings like this but I think I better
stop
with Daniel.
