The Thorned Lily

As you walk up from the Parking lot from across the street, the building looks out of place amongst all the new and remodeled buildings around it. It has a quaint old charm that somehow draws you to it. As your reach the doors to the glass fronted building, you can see a slot where a steel gate comes down just above the overhang. Directly above the door, on the building itself, is a large, black sign that reads “The Thorned Lily” in red and white neon letters. On the door itself is a sign that reads. ““Leave your anger, your hatred, and your prejudged thoughts outside, for this is a place to relax and be free.”” As you enter the main room, to your right is a raised stage with speakers and microphone off to one side, and to the left are three booths that are flush to the window offering a view of the street and sidewalk. After the last booth is an iron staircase leading down to ““Between the Lines””. The flooring throughout the coffee shops is a beautiful, polished hardwood, and the tables, chairs and booths are all in wood grain. 15 feet from the door and to the right of the door is a large wooden bar, complete with numerous bar stools. Behind the bar are 4 different coffee makers, and 2 espresso machines with a two stemmed steamer set up. Not only does this place have coffee, which is the main drink, but it does have it’s ABC license to sever hot coffee mixers. On either side of the bar are glass display cases, filled with all kinds of delicious looking pastries, made fresh every day in the bakery in the back. Directly across from the bar are couches and chairs of different patterns and sizes. The most common are over- stuffed armchairs. On either side of the couches are tables with lamps build in. The armchairs on the other hand have just one table on the side. To the right of the couch and chair area, and left of the stage are sets of bathrooms. Behind these couches and chairs is a mural on the wall. Past that point there is are a set of stairs, leading to the second floor. Then to the back and left of the bar is a semi closed off space, that has yet another mural. On the outside wall hang four dartboards. In this semi-closed off space there are both card tables and other, smaller tables set up for checkers and chess. Here the lights are a bit dimmer. Directly back from the front door, are two steel doors. One leads to roaster room which houses three large roasters, and 15 flavor/decaf roasters. The second set of doors is for a private club; an area for chosen patrons to come, relax and unwind. The only way into this room is with a pass key. Just past that are a set of four offices, each with their own doors. The second floor is sealed off from the first except for a set of stairs. From the second floor you can look out over the main floor, as the walls are made completely of glass (game note: bullet proof). There are four shelves of books to read and buy (books that are part of the stock from ““Between the Lines””). There are numerous chairs scattered around for people to sit and relax. In front there are another two sets of bathrooms, and four tables with five computers each. These are all hooked up to the Internet, at a charge of five dollars an hour. Passkeys are required to turn the computers on. The Coffee house has open mic night Thursday’s, and Poet’s corner Monday’s. Friday and Saturday nights feature live local singers, songwriters, and even small bands, who come to get their talents heard. With a friendly staff and the freshest coffee in town, this will be the place to come for a good cup of Jo.
