CHAPTER SEVENTEEN Almost Home
Heylo whispered into Mullen's ear, "Soon, you will be home, my dear rooftop friend."
She whisked Mullen around to the front of the house and found the manhole cover. She leaned down, with Mullen safely in her arms, and removed it. Then, with Mullen held tightly, she jumped downward, into the sewers. She saw his boat tied nearby, so she carefully placed him in the end. She took her cloak off and covered him, to keep him warm, so he would not go into shock. Even though he had the healing powder in his wound, she was still concerned. The wound was deep...and she knew that Mullen had lost a great deal of blood.
She hurried briskly up the ladder and replaced the manhole cover, then jumped back down, and climbed into the boat with Mullen. She knew he was in and out of consciousness and that he might not be able to help her get him home. His scent was of this place...the sewer. "Does he live down here?" she quietly asked herself. She looked down at Mullen as she guided the boat. "Mullen? Um, we are in the sewer now, so could you tell me where you live?"
*sighs* He's out again. "I wonder if he actually lives down here?" Heylo wondered aloud. She peered through the darkness. There was just enough light filtering in from the streets above to see fairly well. She had no idea these sewers were so extensive. Heylo hummed while she steered the boat. It was an old song, a folk song from Europe. Her grandmother had taught it to her when she was a small child. She thought the song might relax Mullen. He seemed a little nervous. Maybe he sensed that she was Vampire, now. She had to continue to be on her guard...make sure that he didn't try to hurt her. "He should realize by now, even if he just THINKS I'm Vampire, that I'm not going to hurt him...and that if I was...the smell of his deliciously scented blood would have driven me to frenzy, and he would have already been lost," she thought to herself.
I hum as I push the boat along...searching with my keen sense of smell to see if I can follow Mullen's trail, from earlier. There isn't really much to go on, since he obviously traveled by boat. Still, I try to keep focused. He could have entered by another manhole...or he could actually live down here, somewhere. I should be able to pick up on either of those, should I come across something he touched recently.
Just then, Heylo noticed movement under her cloak that covered her friend, "Mullen? You awake? I need to know how to get you home, my friend. Can you tell me? We are in your boat...in the sewers." She watched closely...and listened. She remembered that Mullen's weapons were stashed in her cloak...but she hoped he would not use them against her...especially since she was trying to help him.
