**Domestic Violence (My Own Personal Pain)**

RAPE

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (1995),
an estimated 500,000 women are sexually assaulted each year!
This includes 170,000 rapes and 140,000 attempted rapes.

This means that a woman was raped every 3 minutes
The crime statistics show that a woman was actually raped every 5 minutes, however,
the estimate above is thought to be more accurate, given that most rape victims never report the rape.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Over two-thirds of violent victimizations against women
were committed by someone known to them: 31% of female victims
reported that the offender was a stranger.
Approximately 28% were intimates such as husbands or boyfriends, 35% were acquaintances,
and the remaining 5% were other relatives.
(In contrast, victimizations by intimates and other relatives accounted for only 5% of all violent victimizations against men.
Men were significantly more likely to have been victimized
by acquaintances (50%) or strangers (44%) than by intimates or other relatives.)

There are 1,500 shelters for battered women in the United States.
There are 3,800 animal shelters

Each year, medical expenses from domestic violence total at least $3 to $5 billion.
Businesses forfeit another $100 million in lost wages, sick leave, absenteeism and non-productivity.

The American Medical Association estimates that over 4 million women are victims of severe assaults by boyfriends and husbands each year.
About 1 in 4 women is likely to be abused by a partner in her lifetime.

Studies reveal that family violence occurs in two million families in the U.S.
This figure, however, is a conservative one that substantially understates
(because battering is usually not reported until it reaches life-threatening proportions)
the actual number of families affected by domestic violence.
In fact, some researches estimate that one of every two women will be battered at some time in their life.

Among all female murder victims in 1992, 30% were slain by husbands or boyfriends.

IMPACT ON CHILDREN.
Violent juvenile offenders are four times more likely
to have grown up in homes where they saw violence.
Children who have witnessed violence at home are
also five times more likely to commit or suffer violence when they become adults.
