Albums of Purgatory: Firstly, whats the band up to right now?

Seby Moro: We have just finished recording two new songs for a 7” split (with Gotha, an Italian old-thrash band) that will be out in September for the Raptures Asylum Muzik Prod. and we are currently working on new songs for an imminent mini-Cd.

AoP: How would you describe the Abiura sound?

SM: As a letal architecture for a ripping headache. Or better, we are working for  it…

AoP: How did you become involved with the band in 2000?

SM: I knew Nicolas, the guitar player, ‘cause we both were editors of underground ‘zines (Nicolas still runs his one and I collaborate with a webzine). A day he phoned me to ask me if I knew some singer for his brand new Brutal Death band. At the time I was singing with a Death Metal group but the other members were not so much into the genre so I decided to try with this new band.

AoP: Why did the name change, to Abiura, come about and what does it mean?

SM: Our first name was “Devoured by vermin”, a Cannibal Corpse song. With that name you can only play in a brutal way, but we want to explore different  ways of expression, remaining in he extreme metal field, of course. So we decided  to change the name in Abiura (abjuration, in English), a name that has an “extreme” meaning but not a strong connection with some kind of music.

AoP: Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?

SM: Yes, I remember it  well. It  was at a metal festival in the beach. I was drunk as hell and I started a furious headbanging, even in the slow parts… Anyway we played only three songs ’cause the police stopped all, ah ah ah!

AoP: What are your favourite Abiura tracks?

SM: “Soundtrack for a dead end” and ”I join the endless line”, the last two. It’s Death Metal but with Black Metal and Darkwave influences, at the same time cerebral and straight in your face.  I hope that the new songs on which we are working will take their place in my playlist!

AoP: What are your favourite all time songs?

SM: Uhm, I listen to almost every kind of music so it’s difficult  to say. But if I had to choose among the metal bands I’d say “Hallowed be thy name” (Iron Maiden), “And then there were none” (Exodus), “Corporal Jigsore quandary” (Carcass), “Tornado of souls” (Megadeth) and “Inner self” (Sepultura).

AoP: What was the first record you bought?

SM: It was Beethoven’s seventh simphony when I was six   years old and I was learning to play the piano. Anyway the first rock album I bought was “The number of the beast”.

AoP: What would be your dream band line-up?

SM: Jeff Buckley / Mike Patton - Vocals
       Chris Squire (Yes) – Bass
       Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah) - Guitar
Johnny Marr (The Smiths)  - Guitar
      F. Chopin – Keyboards
Gene Hoglan (Strapping Young Lad) - Drums

AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and music in general today?

SM: I think that in music, as well as in  every sort of artistic expression, the quality is almost ever the same. I don’t think things like “the music of the sixties was better than the music of today” because I think that inspiration is like a neverending flux. Few leaders, many followers. A genius, now and then. This for the music in general. As regards Metal I think that the only person who could be called a genius nowadays is Devin Townsend: he has ideas, freshness and, above all, he’s totally crazy!

AoP: Do you have any funny stories you can share with us about the band?

SM: You have to know that Raphael, our drummer, and Nick, one of our guitarists, trade strange vhs without cover and titles like “Ilona and her friends” and “Dog is woman’s best friend” and we start suspecting that friendship is not the main subject of the films...

AoP: and finally, what do you see in the future for Abiura?

SM: A Mini-Cd for the end of the year, many live gigs and girls, girls, girls!!! Check out our website http://go.to/abiura or send a mail to abiura@katamail.com for all the news!
