Albums of Purgatory interview Ancient Tale

Firstly, what's the band up to right now?

Erez: We are writing new material and searching for female vocalist.

How would you describe the Ancient Tale sound?

Steve: Well, in the beginning it was some weird mix of Heavy, Progressive, Alternative & Goth. Today our sound became more solid, dark & heavy.

How did you get involved with the band?

Steve: Me & Dave formed a band called "Fairytale" in the middle of 1999. Band went through lots of different reincarnations. In summer of 2002 we wanted to change our drummer & guitar player and music style once again. So we met Dan, and he brought Erez with him. By the way, in that time the bands name "Fairytale" was forced to be changed to "Ancient Tale" because we found two different bands with the same name ahead of us.

Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?

An.Ta. Of cores we do!

Steve: We were treated so badly by the moron who actually was soundman.

It was funny. Here in Israel most of the metal bands play or Death, or Black, or some sort of weird Trash Metal. And when some one comes out and start to play something else, people always look at you trying to understand "…what the hell are you, and what the hell are you trying to tell us?!"

Are you involved in any other projects and if so how do they compare to Ancient Tale?
Steve: No…

Dan: None of us.

What are your favorite Ancient Tale tracks?

An.Ta.: "Anti Urban Hymn" (Track 2 on the CD "Desire to Burn" that I've sent you).

What are your favorite all time songs?

Steve: If metal it's definitely "Black Winter Day" by "Amorphis".

If non Metal -""Jealous" by Sinead O'Connor

Dave: Metallica - "One"

Erez: Iron Maiden - "Moon child"

Dan: Led Zeppelin - "Kashmir"

What the first record you ever bought?

Steve: "Doors" "Greatest Hits"
Dave: Metallica - "Master of Puppets"

Erez: White Snake - "Love Hunter"

Dan: Accept - "Metal Heart"

Which album was it that got you into metal and can you explain why?

Steve: "Type o Negative" "Bloody Kisses". See, previously I used to listen to Heavy Rock & to Grange. But I always wanted something more heavily than that. When I was in the middle of my army service in IDF, someone gave that CD to me. And I loved it so much, so I listened to it night & day. And then some of my friends told me: "If you like this kind of music, you definitely should try to listen to Doom Metal. And he was right. So, I've started with Type O, and finished with the bands like "My Dying Bride", "Gathering", "Anathema" & etc.

Dave: Metallica - "…And justice or all…"

Erez: Deep Purple - "Deep Purple in Rock"

Dan: "Ancient Tale". No joking! When I met them I was more in to the Jazz & Fusion…

What's the last album you purchased and what did you think of it?

Steve: "Erben der Schopfung" "Twilight". Very nice Industrial/Goth.
Dan: "Koяn"
Dave: Metallica - "Saint Anger".

Erez: Lust Dream Theater's album.

What would be your dream band line-up?

Steve: Virgil Donati - Drums, Billy Sheehan - Bass, Christofer Jonson - Guitar, Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho - Guitar, Serj Tankian - Vocals

If you could do a cover for a tribute album to any band, which song of which band would you pick and why?

Dave: Well, it's very hard question, because all of us have very different musical background…

Steve: But I guess it going to be Christina Aguilera's "Fighter"… :D /o/

What do you think of the position of metal and music in general today?

Steve: There is a room for improvement for both of them…

Which other bands stand out for you at the moment?

Steve: None…

Do you have any funny stories about the band you can share with us?

Steve: Not, really because our band is a one big funny story by it's self.

And finally, what do you see in the future for Ancient Tale?

Steve: Of course we want to get big international success, but we are not prophets, or fortune tellers and I can't predict the future. But you know, if you like that you do and you truly believe in it, one day all your hard work will be paid. Defiantly!!!!
