Albums of Purgatory interview Bottom
Albums of Purgatory: Whats the band up to right now?
Sina: We're working on our next record.
AoP: How would you describe the Bottom sound?
Sina: Heavy, heavy rock from the other side and lower.
AoP: How did the band begin?
Sina: We met in the Lower Eastside of New York City in the fall of 1998 and started recording and touring right away. Its been a rock'n'roll cover story ever since.
AoP: Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?
Sina: It was on Nila's birthday at a small venue in New York City. We celebrated with cake and bubbly.
AoP: You have toured with quite a variety of huge names ranging from Alien Ant Farm through to Cannibal Corpse through to the Misfits. Which bands have you enjoyed playing along side the most?
Sina: That's tuff. Weve played with all kinds: punks, stoners, crustcore, country outfits, metal militia. We like most music and bands if they/it are genuine. Our excitement about our live show comes from connecting with the audience. We attack playing with the idea of winning them over, so to speak. Even when it means one at a time. It's cool to play with other bands but we're there for folks that came out to see us play. It's exciting to play to new ears, but it's even more important to knock 'em dead time and time again. We feel defeated if we just half-maimed 'em or left anyone standing.
AoP: What are your favorite Bottom tracks?
Sina: The one I'm playing.
Clementine: The next record. Its is going to be great.
AoP: What are your favourite all time songs?
Sina: off my head---Sympathy for the Devil, Working Class Hero, When the Levee Breaks always give me chills and a lil' ditty by Nick Drake called "Smoking Too Long". it could go on for hours. bunch of nirvana stuff and Helmet's got some runner-ups on Meantime.
Clementine: The Band, Up On Cripple Creek, Neil Young, Heart of Gold, Jimi Hendrix, Axis Bold As Love, every damn song on that record. And pretty much every Cole Porter song ever written.
AoP: What was the first record you bought?
Clementine: Cheap Trick Live at Budokon.
Sina: I went shopping with my older brother when I was about 7. I could barely see into the record bins. The only group i knew was the Beatles. I got Yellow Submarine as a gift earlier that year and knew some of their hits. I just picked the next record in their section: The White Album. I was damn CORNfused by tracks like No.9. It made no sense to me. I played the disc over and over trying not to lead on that I felt ripped off that there were no cartoons.
AoP: What would be your dream band line-up?
Sina: I'm in it.
Clementine: Ditto. Of course if we had some beefcake dancing in a cage side-stage, that would enhance the dream a little bit
AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and music in general today?
Clementine: I'd say the position is doggy-style, rammed up the ass by a big Coke-shilling, hearing impaired corporate cock.
Sina: 99.9% of metal is crap. It's a crap fest. 99.9% of it all 'music' is crap. Thus making that 0.1% truly special. The same holds true for the industry itself. Ultimately, the issue of quality lays in the hand of the artist. It's his/her responsibility. Unfortunately the term "artist/musician" is also flooded with shysters. 99.9% crap.
AoP: Do you have any funny stories about the band you can share with us?
Sina: what isn't funny about a rock band.
Clementine: Let me show you our financial records. That causes me to laugh hysterically for hours and hours
AoP: and finally, what do you see in the future for Bottom?
Sina: a legacy of riffs.
