Albums of Purgatory interview Cattle Decapitation's Travis Ryan
Albums of Purgatory: Firstly, whats the band up to right now?
Travis: WE're gearing up for our north American tour with Gwar and Cannibal Corpse after
that. WE're coming
to kill you fuckers.
AoP: How would you describe the Cattle Decapitation sound?
Travis: Frantic. Disturbing. There is melody. There are catchy parts. It's cool.
AoP: How did you become involved with the band?
Travis: Cause I told them I was the best and Gabe already liked what he heard, but I still
kept insisting that I was the best, he said "ok man, that's cool" and I said
"you don't get it, I'll kill you with my vocals" and he just said "cool
man, come try out" and I cut him off and said "look man, I'm the best, get that
straight." I've been in the band ever since.
AoP: Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?
Travis: We went to go play with Incantation and Vital Remains and we got there and turns
out the booker
owner or whatever forgot to put us on the schedule when he scheduled us. We called around
with our shit
inside the car. Dave's friend said there was a huge party and we could probably play. It
was in Chula
Vista, CA. There were so many people there. We set our shit up, I played guitar at
the time and I went to
hit the first note and the cops busted in. it was crazy. There were like 100 kids in one
room right in our faces and I saw the cops busting in yelling at us to stop. We didn't
even start.
AoP: How does it feel to have been asked to be involved in
the Carcass tribute CD?
Travis: It was one of the best things that ever happened to me within the realm of music.
Sean from
Impaled and I agreed it was almost better than being signed.
AoP: What are your favourite Cattle Decapitation tracks?
Travis: This one that I have on a tape that is from when I played guitar and did vocals.
At that time Dave
did bass and Gabe played drums. It was total grind. Very terrifying but had a weird
groove. This one song
on there is our second fastest song we had. It was awesome. It's not released though.
Pedeadstrians, Release The Gimp, Chunk Blower, Colon Blo, there's a lot.
AoP: What are your favourite all time songs or albums?
Travis: Shit I don't know. I have too much shit. Rodd Keith's "I died today"
compilation is priceless. Frederick Thordenals special defects.
AoP: What was the first record you bought?
Travis: Quiet Riot's "Metal Health".
AoP: What would be your dream band line-up?
Travis: Sean Reinert on drums, Christian Vander on second drums, Boyd Rice on vocals and
noise loops,
Juan Brujo alternating on vocals, Michael Morley and Lee Ranaldo on guitar. No bass.
AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and music in
general today?
Travis: It's kind of cheesy and kitch. Sucks. There's too much of it too. Too much crap.
People don't take
it seriously enough still.
AoP: Which bands in the underground do you think stand out
for you at the moment?
Travis: Disgorge from Mexico. Insane.
AoP: Do you have any funny stories about the band you can
share with us?
Travis: We're completely founded on private jokes and shit. That's all we do. Fart jokes.
Shit, I can't
remember any stories really. I know there are a ton. So much shit has happened.
After the Gwar tour I'm
sure we'll have some shit for you... haha.
AoP: and finally, what do you see in teh future for Cattle
Decapitation?
Travis: Gore.
