Albums of Purgatory Interview Coalesce Sean Ingram
- Albums of Purgatory: Firstly, whats the band up to?
Sean Ingram: WE JUST GOT OFF OF TOUR OF THE US. WE AREN'T REALLY DOING ANYTHING NOW
OTHER THAN A FEW COMP APPEARANCES. JAMES IS ON TOUR WITH HIS OTHER BAND, AND WE WONT
DO ANYTHING UNTIL MAYBE NEXT YEAR.
AoP: How would you describe the Coalesce sound?
SI: I ALWAYS CALLED IT CRASH AND BANG. WE AREN'T METAL, AND WE AREN'T HARDCORE OR
PUNK, WE ARE JUST LOUD. WE DON'T FIT INTO ANY OF THOSE FASHION SCENES.
AoP: How did Coalesce start in 94 as Breach? What was the
difference in sound compared to todays Coalesce?
SI: WE PROGRESSED TO A MORE FOCUSED GROOVE ORIENTED MACHINE.
AoP: Can you remember the bands first gig (how did it go)?
SI: YEAH, IT SUCKED. THE SHOW WE WERE SUPPOSED TO PLAY GOT CANCELLED, SO WE INVITED
OUR FRIENDS OVER TO OUR PRACTICE SPACE AND WE PLAYED FOR THEM THERE. THE SHOTS FROM
THE FIRST SEVEN INCH ARE FROM THAT SHOW
AoP: Who have been your favourite bands to gig with?
SI: DEFINATELY BLOODLET, AND JUST ANY LOCAL KC BAND.
AoP: What are your favourite Coalesce tracks?
SI: WHAT HAPPENS ON THE ROAD, SAFE PLACE, BOB JR., BURN EVERYTHING
AoP: What are your favourite all time songs?
SI: HURRICANE BY LISA LOEB, ANYTHING BY THE MISFITS, DANZIG, AND THE NEW ANNIVERSARY
RECORD IS AN INSTANT CLASSIC.
AoP: What was the first record you bought?
SI: FIRST ONE I ACTUALLY BOUGHT WAS "SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME" BY SLAPSHOT.
AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and music in general
today?
SI: I THINK IT GENERALLY SUCKS. PEOPLE HAVE CATEGORIZED, AND SUBCATEGORIZED HEAVY
MUSIC SO MUCH, IT TENDS TO HAVE GONE BACK TO THE FASHION SCENES, WHERE DRESS IS THE ONLY
THING THAT SEPERATES SHOWS.
AoP: Do you have some funny stories about the band you can share
with us?
SI: PROBABLY NOTHING I WOULDN'T GET IN TROUBLE FOR, AND I HAVEN'T BEEN DRINKING.
AoP: and finally, what do you see in the future for Coalesce?
SI: PROBABLY HUGE INTERVALS BETWEEN THINGS, PISSING OFF MANY RECORD LABELS, BASICALLY
DOING IT FOR FUN, FOR REAL.
