Albums of Purgatory interview Deconstruct

Firstly, whats the band up to right now?
We've got so many things on our plate right now! Our main focus is making the new EP "Sign Of Things To Come" a success. We have been working hard and coordinating with our label, Apocalypse Records, to get the EP added to college and commercial radio. We really want to get the sound we have created out to as many people as we can.
We've also been recording new tracks as well with producer/guitarist Joe Fraulob. In between that we are gearing up for a US tour. We've been very busy.

How would you describe the Deconstruct sound?
That's always a hard question to answer because you want to turn someone off to it by an inacurate description. But if I were being beaten unmercifully for an answer, I would say our sound is a dark cross between brutality and melody. It's new enough to not be called old-school, and old school enough not to be called "nu-metal."
I think the "nu-metal" stereotype has been beaten to death by now. It seems almost like if your singer doesn't sing like he's gargling on broken glass, than you get lumped into this "nu-metal" genre. It's kinda funny.

How did you get involved with the band?
I was in a band that to me, felt like it was going nowhere. There were alot of internal problems, everybody plotting behind everybody's backs, and I started losing interest. You know how it goes when a girl can't hold your attention anymore, and you get the "wandering eye".
Anyway, I had talked to Joe sometime before about hooking up and seeing what happened. He told me they already had someone they were working with.
One night, while out at a club I was talking to a mutual friend and explaining my current band situation, and how I'd like to play in Joe's band. He called Joe up on the spot and told him that I was the singer his band needed, and to come down to the club and talk to me. He did, and a week later I went to Joe's recording studio and auditioned by laying tracks on a song called "Snap". Now, here we are.

Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?
Our first gig was with Disturbed, Taproot, Chevelle, and Unloco in front of 4700 people. Kinda hard to forget, huh?
We had gotten a call from David Draiman of Disturbed, whom we had submitted our EP to. He asked if we would like to the April 19th, 2003 stop of the Music As A Weapon 2 tour. How do you turn down an offer like that?
The show was amazing for us. The lights, sound, and most importantly the crowd were all insane! After our performance, we went out into the crowd and hung out with the fans, signing CD's and ticket stubs. It was a very cool and surreal experience for us.

Are you involved in any other projects and if so how do they compare to Deconstruct?
Right now, all of my attention is focused on Deconstruct. We have more than enough to keep us busy for the time. Later on, I'd like to do some other things musically that don't fit into the format of Deconstruct, so long as they don't take time away from what Deconstruct is doing at that moment.

What are your favourite Deconstruct tracks?
Everytime we write a new song, it becomes my favorite. Right now it's a track called "Silence", which we plan on putting out on our next release.

What are your favourite all time songs?
That's like Hugh Hefner lining up every Playboy Playmate and asking you to chose one. There's just too many to pick from.

What the first record you ever bought?
When I was 12, I bought Iron Maiden "Somewhere In Time" on vinyl. It was the gateway to my juvenile delinquency.

Which album was it that got you into metal and can you explain why?
It was more a collection of albums: KISS-Destroyer, Motley Crue-Shout At The Devil, Iron Maiden-Somewhere In Time & Powerslave, Slayer-Reign In Blood. They all had a dark edge to them, that at the time emcompassed how I felt by everything around me.

Whats the last album you purchased and what did you think of it?
Mudvayne - The End Of All Things To Come: It was good, but I was more impressed by LD50.

What would be your dream band line-up?
For my style of singing, I'm in it.

If you could do a cover for a tribute album to any band, which song of which
band would you pick and why?
I would pick "We Die Young" - Alice In Chains. Layne Staley was a huge inspiration and influence for me when I started to sing, so I would like to pay homage to him.

What do you think of the position of metal and music in general today?
I think metal is alive and well. It has become more accepted in the mainstream public, It's great to go to a movie and hear metal bands used in the soundtrack, and background of action sequences. I think music will always be a foundation for life, regardless of what genre or type it is.

Which other bands stand out for you at the moment?
I have actually been staying away from listening to anything new right now, just due to the fact that we are in the studio right now. I don't want what I'm doing there to be clouded by anything another band is doing right now. I feel like it helps me to stay as original as possible. When we're done though I'd like to check out Nothingface, Motograter, Grade 8, and Depswa. I've heard alot about them and want to see what they're all about.

Do you have any funny stories about the band you can share with us?
The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the time our drummer Darren tied one on and drank a cup of chewing tabacco spit on a dare from Joe. He ran right out and puked. It was pretty funny at the time.

and finally, what do you see in the future for Deconstruct?
Nothing but the best! We are very driven, and focused on what goals we are trying to acheive, and I think we will see the results of what we are putting out come back soon.
