Albums of Purgatory interview Descent
Albums of Purgatory: Firstly, what are you up to right now?
Descent: Well, pretty much our schedule consists of playing about 6 times a
month, and promoting ournew CD as much as possible.
AoP: How would you describe the Descent sound?
Descent: HEAVY and BRUTAL!! HEHE actually, we sound a bit like Slayer/meets Pantera/Meets Slipknot type shit. In your face as much as possible, but not without melody and harmony...of course.
AoP: How did you get involved with the band?
Descent: I started it! Actually, the drummer and I picked up our instruments together and it's grown from there. We were just sick of hearing crap on the radio all the time and figured if we want heavy shit, we have to do it ourselves...so there ya go.
AoP: Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?
Descent: Oh yes!! Our first gig was just Brian and I at a place called Coaches Bar and Grill. I was like 13 and he was 11. We hadn't been playing very long, but it was an open jam type thing and we decided to give it a shot. We played about 3 covers and when asked to do an encore, Brian had to be called back to the stage!! He bolted right after the show. HEhe. We were nervous as hell, but that didn't stop us from going back the next week!!
AoP: What are your favourite Descent tracks?
Descent: My personal favorites are Eyes, Paper cut throat (a new one), and Asshole.
AoP: What are your favourite all time songs or albums?
Descent: hats really hard to say...I like just about anything Metallica puts out, I love the sit out of Pantera and Slipknot, Testament's album 'The Gathering" is one of the best metal records of all fuckin time.
AoP: What was the first record you bought?
Descent: The Black Album, by Metallica
AoP: What would be your dream band line-up?
Descent: If you mean, for a concert what bands would I have there...let me see. I almost already got to see that, minus a few key elements. At the 2001 Tattoo the earth concert, they had Sevendust, Slayer, SLipknot, Mudvayne..I would have added Metallica, Pantera, Tool, NIN, System of a Down, and Megadeth. That would be a heavy fuckin day to remember.
AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and
music in general today?
Descent: I think it sucks. Metal isnt getting any recognition for the truly heavy and unyeilding bands. I think the heavier names in music should get more airplay and credit for their music.
AoP: Which other bands in the scene really stand out for you at the moment?
Descent: The local scene in Dallas isnt really what it should be.
There are a couple bands we can say really catch our eye, like Prophecy,
Jacknife, and a few others. The rest are just sell outs looking for a
quick burst of fame.
AoP: Do you have any funny stories about the band you
can share with us?
Descent: Too many to mention, but I think I can conjure one from this fucked up brain of mine...One time, at a Halloween show we played at this bar,we brought a dead pigs head and put it on a stake right in front of us. We we're on the second level, so as the show went on, it would start to thaw and stuff and it started "falling apart"!! Everyone in the crowd was like, "is that real?!" HELLZ YEAH it was! Then Ryan, our singer, licked it all the way up it's face!! Everyone almost puked. It was great!! hehehe
AoP: Finally, what do you see in the future for
Descent?
Descent: Hopefuly a long fun filled road of bringing people the heavy music
they crave for. We plan to play as much as possible and give people as
much as possible without having to rob people for it!! We intend on
getting paid no less,we won't lie, but we dont want excess. This is for
the future of heavy music in general and the fans of it. Its all for them. We're
just hardcore fans ourselves.
