Albums of Purgatory interview Dreamtale's Esa Orjatsalo
Albums of Purgatory: Firstly, whats the band up to right now?
Esa Orjatsalo: Currently Dreamtale is rehearsing new material for the next album. And of
course we are working with our new vocalist Tomi Viiltola so that he'll be ready to do
live shows in autumn.
AoP: How would you describe the Dreamtale sound?
EO: We paly melodic heavy metal. I don't know what else to say. We have fast songs with
double bassdrums and we got slower songs. We play that kind of music that we ourselves
would listen.
AoP: How did you get involved with the band?
EO: When i moved to Tampere (the hometown of Dreamtale) I was looking for a metal band to
join in. I did few gigs as a session guitar player, and then guys from Dreamtale contacted
me. And here I am...
AoP: What sort of reactions did you get when 'Beyond Reality'
was released?
EO: Mostly the feedback has been positive, of course there have been some negative
feedback also, but what I have heard the album has been well liked. Since the album is at
the moment released only in Finland and
Japan, I am waiting for more feedback when it released world wide.
AoP: What kind of effect has Pasi had on the band since
joining on bass?
EO: Pasi is a talented multi-instrumentalist and he has contributed a lot to our
arrangements. I'd say that our next album will have much better arrangements than Beyond
Reality. Has bass sound is also more metal type than Alois's.
AoP: What are your favourite Dreamtale tracks?
EO: Call of the Wild is one of my favourite tracks, but I also like Farewell... and
Dreamland a lot.
AoP: What are your favourite all time songs or albums?
EO: My favourite all time song is Helloween's How Many Tears. All time favourite album is
Helloween Keeper of the Seven Keys pt.2.
AoP: What would be your dream band line-up?
EO: Marco Hietala (Nightwish) -vocals & bass
Kai Hansen (GammaRay) -guitars & vocals
Esa Orjatsalo (Dreamtale) -guitars ;)
Jukka Nevalainen (Nightwish) -drums
Jens Johansson (Stratovarius) -keys
AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and music in
general today?
EO: I think that metal music is once again gaining bigger and bigger audiences. Nighwish
seems to be more and more succesful and other bands get their share also. I think that
things look good for the metal music nowadays. Bands are much better than in the eighties,
quality is something that counts more nowadays.
AoP: Do you have any funny or unusual stories about the band
you can share with us?
EO: Well, when we were doing our second or third gig as Dreamtale. We were playing in
place where there is usually more rock or dance oriented bands playing. There was this
about 50 years old lady who keep shouting at us to "turn it down" (which in
finnish is: "hiljemmalle"). She keep shouting at us and her husband unplugged
our mixer console etc. Finally she threatened to call the police if we wouldn't turn our
volyme level down. She called the police and the police took her to the jail... She was
disturbing the place more than our volyme. It was really satisfying to see her dragged
away. I don't know if this is funny for anyone, but we are a boring band, nothing ever
happens...
AoP: and finally, hat do you see in the future for Dreamtale?
EO: Hopefully more gigs and second album within a year. Lots of alcohol and money ;).
Seriously we'll start recording our second album late this year or early next and it
should be out sometime next summer.
