Albums of Purgatory interview Porno Coma
Firstly, whats the band up to right now?
Just like everybody else who recorded an album, unsuccesfuly trying to get a
distribution deal... our music seems not to have the right parameters for todays
ultra conservative market. We're also all involved in SEPTEMBER 12, Montreal's
first doom engine which started last year, right after the Porno Coma studio
session.
How would you describe the Porno Coma sound?
You tell me. Our sound evolved a lot. When we started, we played some sort of
"prog" thrash/core with a touch of Bad Brains and Voïvod. We've
then been recently compared in Terrorizer Mag to "Khanate and Voïvod
jamming together with Gwar's costumes" or something like that.
Half the band is under 24, and let's just say the other half is old enough to
have bought "welcome to hell" when it was brand new. So we draw influences
from 70's to 90's music, from Iceburn to Sabbath to Primus to DRI to King Crimson
to Brutal Truth to the Melvins to Cheetah Chrome Motherfuckers to GISM to Voïvod
to Victims Family... Mix all that with a good dose of sarcasm towards modern
generic metal (no matter what's the color, black, death, nu...) and here we
go.
We call it TRUE DOWNTOWN BROWN METAL.
How did you get involved with the band?
I met Mathieu when I joined the band he was drumming for, Tenebrae (Mtl's 1996
CoF clone, see http://www.mp3.com/TENEBRAE666). We became very quickly bored
of modern (cheesy) black metal and decided to start Porno Coma, with no real
direction. That was in 1997.
Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?
Yeah, it was at Mtl's shitty disco place called Foufounes Electriques, with
Martyr (who still play lots of guitar solos) and Decayed Remains (who were wearing
Musketeers costumes).
Are you involved in any other projects and if so how do they compare to
Porno Coma?
I had founded a band called Doris in 1999, some sort of grinding metal (http://www.mp3.com/doris),
who included singers from Aphasia and Atheretic. Doris was euthanasized in March
2002 because I started to get bored of it and with the drummer Julien, we staretd
a new band called E with Miguel on guitar (who played on Cryptopsy's "Whisper
supremacy"). E is currently auditionning singers, the music is really heavy,
dissonant and slow, fans of Iceburn and Eisenvater (whose song "Idiot"
we play) will like that. E should relase a demo CD by the end of 2003.

Finally, Mike (from doom/goth/black/whatever band ...AND HERE I LIE see http://www.mp3.com/andhereilie),
Alex (guit. from Porno Coma) and I started September 12 last year. We realeased
a demo (see http://www.mp3.com/september12), this is total doOom for those into
Boris, Earth, Khanate, Teeth of the Lions, Corrupted etc. Mathieu also recently
joined S12 and we're working on new material which will maintain the ultra doom
constructs, with some added experimental subtleties, for an album that I will
produce (target : Fall 2003). This means everybody in S12 (including Mike who
sang for Porno Coma for a while) is in Pono Coma and vice-versa. It has no marketing
value however. But we could mix both repertoires and play a brown doom show...
Let's also mention that I am producing THE GOAT's first release. This is Alex's
other band. Watch this if you're into high class grindcore, ie. Voïvod
/ The Locust influenced thrashing grind-rock. Will be ready in June 2003.

What the first record you ever bought?
DEEP PURPLE "black knight" 7"
Which album was it that got you into metal and can you explain why?
a compilation with Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Bachman Turner Overdrive, The
Runaways, Nazareth etc.
Why ? Ask Freud.
Whats the last album you purchased and what did you think of it?
I think it was SPACEBOY "Searching the Stone Library for the Green Page
of Illusion ", a total masterpiece, I constantly listen to it.
What would be your dream band line-up?
Our current line-up with a record deal.
If you could do a cover for a tribute album to any band, which song of which
band would you pick and why?
We used to play covers from CELTIC FROST and the DAYGLO ABORTIONS. With September
12, we plan to do a doom version of a Police song.
Reason good enough to do a cover : "we like this song and we might do a
great new version". Now that's a revelation.
What do you think of the position of metal and music in general today?
We love the hilarious trends like "brutal" death/power/black/nu metal,
gothic, ska, oi, stoner, Epitaph punk, post rock, emo... We're still wondering
why there are so many bands cloning each others, and why most people need to
perform in strict musical tunnels. One good thing that mp3 piracy will achieve
(I hope) is to counterbalance the exponential overcrowding of the music scene
and weed out all that generic shit, letting only deeply motivated and inspired
people on the map.
Which other bands stand out for you at the moment?
the MELVINS and NEUROSIS for the last 17 years... among newer bands I'd include
MASTODON, PLANET X, KHANATE, TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION, MAUDLIN OF THE WELL,
MUNGBEANDEMON (rip), ASSOCIATION AREA (rip) and tons more...
Do you have any funny stories about the band you can share with us?
Yeah, we've all been involved in black metal bands like Tenebrae or Shade...
and finally, what do you see in the future for Porno Coma?
We concentrate on our own music, which obviously is always a bit too shifted
from the current trends to become succesful, whatever the trends are. Now that
doom seems to be the new hot thing, maybe Porno Coma will get more attention
when S12 has a name... For the moment, there is no record deal in sight, let's
see what happens after the S12 album is ready. I hate making predictions - this
is too difficult, especially about the future.
Thanks for your attention ! Our album is available on cdr format with color
sleeve and 16 pages booklet for US $7 (email me for details).
