Albums of Purgatory: Firstly, whats the band up to right now?

Nicklas Rudolfsson: We will release a new album “Darkness Death Doom” on the 16^th of March! We have has completed the line-up with a new 2^nd guitarist, Tomas Eriksson (ex Grotesque, Intoxicate) so now we are rehearsing with him for upcoming gigs.

 

AoP: How would you describe the Runemagick sound?

NR: I think it’s quite dark and heavy… Darkness Death Doom! Some people say that we sound a bit like a mix of old-school death and heavy doom.

 

AoP: How did the band begin?

NR: The first sign of Runemagick started to grow a long time ago in 1990. Then after some demo releases, line-up problems, break-ups and other shit it started to be serious again in 1997.

 

AoP: Are you involved in any other projects and if so how do they compare musically to Runemagick?

NR: Runemagick is the only active real band I (Nicklas) play in at the moment. But sometimes I’m also involved in projects like Deathwitch (primitive black/death) and The Funeral Orchestra (doom). The other members have no projects at the moment…

 

AoP: Can you remember your first gig (how did it go)?

 

NR: Yes I think it was in 1991 or 92 and I don’t believe it was a good gig haha!

 

AoP: What sort of reaction have you been getting for the recent album, 'Moon of the Chaos Eclipse' so far?

 

NR: I have not heard so much because the meaning with it was not to send out promos for it because it’s just a strictly limited release. But I have heard good reactions from people who bought it.

 

AoP: What are your favourite Runemagick tracks?

 

NR: Enter the realm of death, On chariots to Hades, Death collector, Grand sabbath pact, Eyes of Kali, Winter, Darken thy flesh……

 

AoP: What are your favourite all time songs or albums?

 

NR: Very hard to say but it must be the old Black Sabbath albums, Coroner, Celtic Frost, Autopsy, Candlemass, Morbid Angel, Kreator + 1000 more….

 

AoP: If you could choose to feature on a tribute album for a band who would you choose and which song would you play?

 

NR: Also very hard to say… maybe Autopsy – “In the grip of winter”.

 

AoP: What was the first record you bought?

 

NR: First LP: Kiss – Creatures of the night

      First Cassette: Iron Maiden - Killers

 

AoP: What would be your dream band line-up?

 

NR: Iommi – guitar, Ron Royce – bass & vocals, Chris Reifert – drums.

 

AoP: What do you think of the position of metal and music in general today?

 

NR: There are a lot of bands and genres and that’s great. But I only care about a few.

 

AoP: Which other bands in the scene really stand out for you at the moment?

 

NR: I just saw a gig in Stockholm with Sloth and Electric Wizard and they were so fucking heavy! Then there are some cool “new” black and death metal bands from Sweden …

 

AoP: Do you have any funny stories about the band you can share with us?

 

NR: Hmm… I don’t know if it’s funny but our drummer recorded the whole new album “Darkness Death Doom” in one take without pushing the stop button. So he played in 58 minutes without a break hahaha he is “funny”!

 

AoP: and finally, what do you see in the future for Runemagick?

 

NR: Hopefully some more albums and gigs! Maybe a little tour…
