Extras and Remarks
This beautiful example of a Victorian Gothic-Revival residence stands on the largest residential block of land in center town. Entering from Park Street the semi-circular tree lined drive takes you to the original two storey Carriage House. The property boasts two beautiful garden areas, The Secret Garden and The Bishop's Folly as well as over a dozen mature trees including Beech and Chestnut. This fine house was built in 1876 for the wealthy merchant and shipowner J.R.Corning and his wife Margaret Ann. The builders used oak and mahogany to finish the beautiful staircase ,foyer, two parlours and formal dining-room. Through the dining-room you enter the maid's stairwell and on into the kitchen to the left is a spacious sun-room and to the right lies the pantry and the mudroom. A dumbwaiter in the pantry allows meals to be easily conveyed to your dining-room.
You may access the second floor either by the main staircase entering from Forest St.or the maid's staircase which can be accessed internally or from Park St. Once you have reached the landing of the main staircase you can access the four bedrooms two of which have fireplaces. Proceeding down the hall again to the Maid's stairwell you reach the nursery and the maid's quarters, which are conveniently quite separate from the rest of the second level.
