Bob Michelucci, Me, and John Russo
Fellow Pittsburgher Bob Michelucci is a actor,
and producer. Most of the "Dead" fans will remember him as the
Bearded Scope Zombie in Dawn of the Dead. He also acted in and
produced Santa Claws and was the associate producer of Night of the Living
Dead: 30th Anniversary Edition. I had the pleasure of meeting Bob many years
ago and interviewing him more recently.
1. What was your favorite thing to dress up as for Halloween in childhood?
Dracula was my favorite costume (still is).
2.
What is your favorite horror movie and why?
Horror of Dracula. It was one of the first
horror films I remember seeing at a theatre and just thought
Christopher Lee (who I was lucky enough to meet later in my
life and he wrote an introduction for me to the book EROTICISM
IN THE FANTASY CINEMA that I published) was such a terrific
Dracula!
3. Who are
your favorite horror movie actors/actresses?
I have to go again with the
classics...Vincent Price, Karloff, Lee, Cushing.
4. Is there
any particular monster that fascinates you?
All of them.
5.
What is your favorite movie you have acted in &
why?
Naturally, it has to be George Romero's 1978
DAWN OF THE DEAD. Had a great time on the set at the mall and
got to be a "special Zombie" in the film now known as the
"SCOPE ZOMBIE". I also got to play a priest in CHILDREN OF THE
LIVING DEAD and a cop in SANTA CLAWS.
6.
Who did you idolize as a child?
Here we go back to Chris Lee and
Vincent Price.
7. Going to
conventions you have met a lot of famous people, who is your
favorite?
I have gotten to meet many famous people
over the years...Frank Gorshin, David Hedison, Caroline Munro,
Kevin McCarthy and so many more. My favorite people to meet
though are the fans of me in DAWN and of all of the books and
magazines that I published.
8. What has been your favorite horror convention that you've been a guest at?
I really haven't been a GUEST at too many.
Most are cons that I was a dealer at marketing and selling my
books, magazines and trading cards and of those I think the
Chiller Theatre cons in NJ were always fun. The FM con in 1993
was great and of course the 3 cons that I put on (FFCC and
FFCC2 in the 70s and the ZOMBIE JAMBOREE in 93) were great.
9.
What was it like working on Dawn of the Dead?
As I said before it was a lot of fun,
especially because I was already friends with George Romero
and Tom Savini. Everyone was like a big family (and still
are).
10. What made
you get into acting?
Just the fun of it. I still prefer being
behind the scenes producing different entertainment products
and shows.
11. What do
you feel makes a good horror movie?
One that SCARES you for real and makes you
forget it isn't real. A couple of examples to me are NIGHT OF
THE LIVING DEAD, PSYCHO and THE EXORCIST.
12.
Why do you think that people enjoy being
scared?
I think they do (in a theatre or by watching
a video) because they are still safe in real life.
13. Any
current projects?
I have a couple including a
possible new con in 2014 and a Pittsburgh Entertainment Museum
that are both in the works in early stages of development.
