The Satellite

The Image Itself

• The satellite is very small when compared to the rest of the image.
• It is very close to the centre of the image.
• It is the focus of the main element of the image- the observer.
• It is in close proximity to
the zodiac circle and the nebula

Interpretations in terms of “Wishfire” and the “Angel Cycle”

• The most obvious link between this satellite and the “Angel Cycle” is the Angel IV satellite- the topic of the Telemetry album. As the Wishfire album can be seen as a continuation of the “Angel Cycle” it is possible that the satellite is the Angel IV and the album is a continuation, or further expansion, on the events described in Telemetry and Mystery.

• However, it is also possible that this ‘angel’ is the ‘Wishfire’ as Rogue has linked the two together as one character, he has also suggested that the ‘Wishfire’ is a new character within the Cruxshadows mythology so this maybe a new ‘angel’ rather than the Angel IV- which would make sense if we consider the albums to be chronologically arranged as the Angel IV was destroyed at the end of Satellite.

• The satellite is positioned between the zodiac signs of Capricorn and Sagittarius on the zodiac ring and this is significant in a variety of ways. One way in which it maybe significant is in the planets that rule these star signs- Saturn and Jupiter. The Telemetry album was based on a mission to Mars so it maybe that the satellite(s) are moving further from the centre of the solar system heading into deep space.

• Another way in which the zodiac signs maybe significant is in the signs/planets general meaning. For example “… [Jupiter represents] certain elements reaching out to take in and experience many things as needed by the inner essence (shown by the inner cross). It is the largest planet in our solar system and is related symbolically to optimism, a love of freedom, new experiences, generosity, and expansiveness. A relationship with the universe in the form of religion and philosophy is provided by the planet Jupiter. The children of Jupiter have a sense of legal justice whether man made or natural; it also allows its children to grow through impositions and challenges.” Whilst “Saturn and Jupiter symbolize opposing energies in more ways than just the glyph. Saturn would seem to exert an opposing force to limit the expansion of Jupiter. This will keep the Jupiter nature's energies from running rampantly out of control. Saturn is the planet that in earthly life serves to signify restrictions and obstacles you must face if your personal goals are incorrect for you or you have a karmic debt that needs paying. Saturn’s placement in your chart can indicate areas in your life that you will need to be particularly diligent about trying to change or work with. Thus, Saturn has been called both, the planet of fate and the Lord of Karma. Saturn symbolizes the course of time and patience, tradition, and experience. At the best of times it helps to consolidate, and at its worst it restricts the person’s efforts.”

• Jupiter/Sagittarius then represents the philosophical or symbolic reality that is often compared or in competition with the actual physical realities, here represented by Saturn/Capricorn.

• The images which often represent both Sagittarius and Capricorn may also be significant- both are amalgams of two different creatures- much as the Angel IV was a mixture of flesh (bio-neural networks) and machine, and much as the topics of many Cruxshadows songs are the conflict between real and imaginary.

• Rogue has said that- “the zodiac stands as a representation of cosmic forces impacting a physical and scientific world. In a sense- a vast cosmic sensibility that exists at the centre of creation.” Here the satellite is within the zodiac circle- the juxtaposition of the scientific and the cosmic.

• Much of the Cruxshadows work is concerned not only with conflicts but also borderlines- the place where one thing may become another, “You will also find it interesting to note that the angel and the satellite represent the same element divided between symbolic and physical reality- the borderline of which is really the focus of the music- God and Machine, Angel and satellite, fall from grace.” The position of the satellite between these two opposed but complimentary zodiac signs is another incidence of this idea of the borderline.

• The fact that the satellite appears to be heading into a nebula or black hole of some kind maybe a continuation of the Telemetry story in which the satellite studied Mars it maybe that this satellite is studying the nebula/black hole and the contents of the Wishfire album are the results of these observations as the songs on Telemetry are the result of observations of the god creatures on Mars.

• The black hole may also represent the “fall from grace” concept that appears frequently in Rogues work this can be related to the snake and the song The Seraphs within the Wishfire album itself.
