Again we see the
world in a balance. The number of day and dark hours are equal. Tomorrow,
however, the dark shall rule. This Sabbat is the Witch's Thanksgiving.
The Lady mourns Her Lord for today He dies. She knows that He will be reborn
on Midwinter night, yet She will miss Her companion and lover. Her belly is
full with the life of the God.
Throw a Thanksgiving feast. Since the day and night sit in balance this day,
try to find balance in your life.
September 21st
Decorate the altar
with acorns, oak sprigs, pine and cypress cones, ears of corn, wheat stalks
or other fruits and nuts. Also place there a small basket filled with dried
leaves of various colors and kinds.
Arrange the altar, light the candles and incense, cast the Circle and invoke
the God/dess.
Stand before the altar, holding high the basket of leaves, and slowly
scatter them so that they cascade to the ground within the Circle. Say such
words as these:
Leaves fall as they grow old
in time as days grow cold.
Mother Earth pulls her land around her tight
as You, O Great Father Sky, sail toward the West of night
to the lands of eternal enchantment,
wrapped in the coolness of night's contentment.
Fruits ripen and drop their seeds,
A balance of day and night proceeds.
Cold winds blow in from the North wailing their song.
It seems as though nature's power is gone,
O Blessed Mother, Goddess of all,
I know that life continues, like a waterfall.
For without the second harvest spring will not come,
as surely as life is impossible without death and moving on.
Blessings upon you, Father Sky As you journey into the lands of winter
high
and into Mother Earth's loving arms.
Place the basket down and say:
Gracious Mother Earth of all fertility, and life
I have sown and reaped the fruits of my actions, or strife.
Be those actions good and bane.
Grant me the courage to plant seeds of joy and let go of pain,
and love in the coming year, as is my fate,
banishing all misery and hate.
Teach me the secrets of wise existence upon this earth, O luminous Mother
Earth!
Celebrate the Simple Feast and release the Circle.
