The New Girl

Kurt, Scott and Jean sat at their usual table at lunch. They knew Evan and Kitty would be along in a few minutes.

" Did anyone see that new girl?" Jean asked.

" Ja," Kurt replied, " I saw her a little while ago at her locker. She gave me...the look."

" What look would that be, Kurt." Scott replied, " You get so many."

" That come hither look. I bet she has the hots for yours truly. She totally digs this fuzzy dude."

" I think you're letting your mind run away with you," Scott said. " I think the only tail she'll be playing with will be the one in her hair."

" He totally lacks confidence in me, Jean!"

She giggled. " Look, there's Kitty and Evan now. And with that new girl."

Evan waved and jogged over to the table, taking his spot at the end of the table. Kitty and the new girl took their time walking over. Out of nowhere, however, a figure bumped dead into them, making them drop their notebooks. Everyone recovered from the clumsy attack quickly. And the culprit---?

" Toad!" Kitty screamed, " Like, ewww! You touched me!"

Normally, he would have replied with a mouthy comment. But, this time, he focused his attention on the new girl. He'd never seen her before. He said nothing but, to Kitty's surprise, humbled himself to help her pick up her books and, again to her surprise heard him say, sheepishly and almost with a blush, " Sorry. I can be such a clutz sometimes."

" Oh, go away!" Kitty said, approaching him quickly and making him wince back, " You are like such....a toad!" She pushed him impatiently, " Now, get out of my way!"

Toad let them by. He put his hands into his jean pockets ans stood erect in his pathetic manner, as he often did when he was pushed around verbally. Most often when he really didn't do anything wrong to begin with.

" Hey, guys." Kitty said, finally reaching the table, " Like, this is Emily. She takes Biology with me." She invited her to sit with them.

" Ja," Kurt smiled, " We have already met." He leaned over to Emily, definately flirting. She giggled.

" Welcome to Bayville, " Scott offered.

" So, who was that clumsy kid?" She asked, pointing back to Toad, who was still standing there, hands still in his pockets, kicking pebbles miserably.

" Todd, the Toad, Tolansky," Evan replied, drinking a carton of milk. " The campus pest."

" We're cooler than he is," Kurt chimed in. An immature and stupid comment if he ever made one, but, it got her attention. She giggled at him again.

" Like, give it a rest, Kurt," Kitty sighed impatiently. She shook her head. Emily stifled yet another giggle.

" So, tell us about yourself, Emily." Scott smiled. Emily smiled back, " Well, my name is Emily Powers, but you already knew that. I'm staying with my auntie and uncle for the rest of the year while my parents work on the new house. I'm from Maine."

" So, what kind of guys do you go for, Frauline?" Kurt asked sweetly. Another giggle.

" Don't be so rude, Kurt," Jean smirked.

" Don't mind Kurt," Evan laughed to Emily. " He's getting a little desperate. He'll make a move on anything female."

Kurt crinkled up his face and pouted. Point for the Spyke.

***Later***

" Could you be any more obvious?" Jean laughed. Kurt continued to pout, " But, chicks dig that kind of thing, don't they?"

Evan put an arm around him, " Yeah, but you're not dealing with young poultry. You're dealing with a young lady who seems to be on laughing gas."

***Elsewhere***

" He's kinda cute," Emily giggled.

" Like, icksome!" Kitty replied, " Are you sure you can see straight. How can you find anything so desireable in him?"

Emily laughed and brushed some crumbs from her dress, " That's the kind of guy I go for."

" Whatever," Kitty shrugged, " I suppose everyone, like, has their own taste. This one is so totally not mine. If you want him, he's yours. Like, I'm not gonna spar ya for him."

***Not too many days later***

" A crush?! She has a crush?!" Kurt cheered. " Woo-hoo! Wunderbar!" He started dancing about, " Go, tail! Go, tail! Go, tail!"

" Kurt, sit down," Logan growled. He did, but remained very excited. " A crush? I knew I could do it! I'm irresistable!"

" Dunno," Evan replied, " If you put the moves on her any harder, you'd be mauling her."

" And you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna ask her to the dance. I'll finally get a chance to go...and not be stag."

" Elf! If you don't sit sown..." Kurt sat himself back down before Logan could finish. Scott was about to comment, but Kurt kept on, " Don't even say we can't go, man. The fuzz is on a roll!"

Scott didn't have the energy to argue with him. Kurt was just too excited.

" Aw, how cute," Rogue smirked. " Kurt's first date. Oh, how icky."

***Two Days Later***

Kurt dressed nice, topping off his sophisticated style with cologne. For the first time in his life, he wanted to be one of the rich snobs. Let the ladies say "no" to him now. By 7:30, he grabbed a pop tart and jolted out the door. If he was lucky, he could catch her before her class.

At school, as he thought, Emily was at her locker. He leaned against the wall and almost spoke in a purr, " You're dream date has arrived. A crush in your mind, but not to your heart."

Emily shut her locker door partially to see who was talking. When she saw Kurt leaning against the wall, she almost fell to the floor in laughter. " Oh, Kurt! You are so funny!"

Kurt brushed back his hair and bobbed his eyebrows, " Would you like for me to escort you to the upcoming dance, sweet Frauline?" He was quite straightforward. Why beat around the bush, it was in the bag.

" Dance? Oh, Kurt, I can't. I already promised to go with someone else."

" Someone else?" He repeated, not sure he hear her right. " But, aren't I the one you have a crush on? Weren't you hoping to go with me?"

Emily laughed again, " You?" A snicker and a pinch to his cheek, " Kurt, you are so cute. But, as hard as it is to say, you are not my crush."

" Nein? But then..." a brief pause, " Who is?

" Todd, you silly goose!"

" The Toad?!"

" I'm so surprised Kitty didn't blab it all over the place. I didn't get a chance to answer your question a few days back. But, the kind of guys I like are the underdogs. For some reason they tend to treat the ladies better."

" But..."

" Kurt, you should have seen him. It was so cute how he asked me." Emily began.

***Emily's Flashback***

I was walking home from school on Friday. I noticed him up ahead walking by himself. Since we were going in the same direction, I ran up to him and properly introduced myself to him and shook his hand. He seemed very surprised to see me.

He said to me, " Hello. Whatever I'm being accused of, I didn't do it."

I explained that I wasn't accusing him of anything, just wanted to talk. We just clicked from there. He sure blushed an awful lot. Let me tell you, pink isn't his color. He was acting so shy.

My house finally came up and we stopped at my gate. He kept his hands in his pockets and fijited a lot. It was like puppy love in the first grade. He kicked a stone or two before stammering out, " If by any chance...you find it....possible,....maybe....see, there's a dance coming up.....I was kinda thinking....well...you don't have to....but...if you want to..."

Kurt, I couldn't even let him finish. It was so adorable. So, I just blurted out, " I'd love to go, Todd."

***Present***

" And, that's how it went. So, now we're gonna try a relationship and we're going to the dance."

Kurt went silent. He had simply made a fool of himself, and this time it wasn't willingly. Emily sensed his dismay and kissed his cheek, " Don't let it get to you, Kurt. I'll bet you'll find someone. Great guy like you? No sweat."

***Lunch***

" Wow, man. That was harsh," Evan commented. " And to Tolansky!

" Oh, my life is over!" Kurt whined. His hair was a mess from him pulling at it nervously all day from the blow. His voice cracked a bit. Evan wondered if he was going to cry right there in front of him.

" Maybe, a burger and a milkshake will cheer ya up?" He suggested, " My treat on the way home."

" Suck it up," Scott added laying a light punch to Kurt's arm.

" Yeah," Jean chimed in, " There's other fish out there."

He sighed. He was defeated yet again in the world of relationships.

" You try too hard," Evan began, " You were kinda thick on the flirt. Today, girls are the ones making the first move. Just relax, maybe Miss Right will come to you."

Kurt didn't reply. The fact of who it was and how it went down just sickened him. He lifted his burger to take a bite, but ended up sighing and putting it down. " Forget it. I'm gonna be sick. I'm going home." He stood up and walked off.

" Man, that is one blue blue-boy." Evan commented, shaking his head. The others let out a small "hmmmm" as they watched Kurt walk home.
