Kurt and Evan were at their lockers. Kurt was still depressed from a bad attempt at a relationship two weeks before. He looked over to see the girl he had been chasing, Emily Powers, talking to her true crush, her current boyfriend, Todd, the Toad, Tolansky. Evan slammed his locker shut, " Kurt, get over it! Sulking about it isn't going to win her over. She wants him, so let it go." No reply. He had been almost totlly silent since the event. He didn't even look away from the two of them hanging all over each other. It made him want to vomit, and yet he couldn't turn his head. Evan sighed. Nothing he said could help him. He knew it really burned. Or so it looked. He left him there and went to class. ***In the hall, later that day*** " He'd creeping me out," Evan whispered. " I wish we could do something to help him. It's awful not having the weird and mischivious Nightcrawler to keep us on our toes," Jean frowned. " We need to find him someone." Evan smiled, " Get her to...keep him company, ask him to the dance, maybe. He really needs something to get his mind off of this. He's beginning to scare me." " Who should we ask?" Jean thought out loud. " Hey, guys," Kitty smiled, skipping up to them. " Like, what are we talking about?" Evan and Jean cast each other sly smiles. " Like, what's that look for, guys?" " Kitty, look over there and tell me what you see?" Evan pointed. " Like, Blue-boy acting.....blue." " I think you owe it to him to cheer him up," Jeans said. She was half suggestive and half ordering. " Hey, like, it's not my fault Emily wanted the slime bucket over him!" " But, you knew that when you told him she had the crush." She argued, " You set him up for that disappointment. I think you should show him you're sorry and tell him the truth." Kitty sputtered about, trying to find an arguement. Unsuccessful. " Oh, fine. I'll see what I can do." ***The Next Day*** " ‘I'm sorry,'" Kurt read, " ‘ I didn't mean to hurt you and I'd like to offer my apologies.' No signature." " What's that?" Evan asked. Kurt held up a small piece of pink note paper. " Dunno for sure. I found it in my locker this morning." " Ooooh, you have a secret admirer." " An apology. Hmmmm....Emily," Kurt said dreamily. " Are you sure it's Emily though?" Evan asked nervously. " Last I saw, she and Tolansky were still all over each other." " Well, who else could it be, Evan?" Kurt asked. Evan sighed. After lunch, Kurt found yet another note in his locker, again on pink paper. It read: " I know I don't always treat you as well as I probably should. I'm sorry for that too. You're a great guy and I do appriciate your friendship." And again, no signature. Kurt brainstormed. He had talked to Emily before lunch. She merely laughed at the idea. It made him feel worse when she saw her and her true crush embrace. " If Emily isn't leaving me these notes, who is?" It was hard to tell. Kurt knew many girls either by classes or the halls. Many of the girls knew him too. He had an outgoing personality. Who did he know who treated him less than sufficient? Hmmm, just about everybody to some degree. Elaine Mac? No way. She hated him. Sandra Tull? No, not her either. She likes football players. Who?! ***Xavier's Mansion*** " You did a good job pulling him from his dispair," Jean smiled to Kitty. " Yeah, he's back to driving us crazy again," Evan chimed in. " Look, I only did it cuz he was, like, annoying me with his sulking and you guys wanted me to cheer him up. So, like, now he's cheered up and now you're complaining about him being happy. Like, what do you want from me?" " He thought the notes were from Emily." Evan admitted. Kitty pouted. " He's not going to settle down unless you come out and tell him the whole truth, Kitty." Jean scolded. " In other words, make him miserable again?" " No. We just want you to be responsible and honest." " It's only right, Kitty." Evan nodded, " You started this whole mess. You should fix it." ***Kurt's Room*** Kurt lay on his stomach on his bed. He was still in his "normal" form. He was so excited about the notes, he didn't even bother turning it off when he came home. He thought of every girl he could. Not one felt right. Those was had the guts to confront merely laughed at him, or gently rejected him. A knock to his door tore Kurt from his thoughts. " Ja?" " Kurt?" A muffled voice called, " Can I come in?" " Come on in, Kitty. I'm decent." Kitty phased through the door and walked over to the bed, " Kurt, I need to tell you something." " Sure. I'm all pointy ears." " Kurt, I'm so sorry. Like, this whole thing was my fault." " Come again?" Kurt was a bit confused now. Kitty sat beside him as he lay on his stomach, watching her carefully. She picked up one of the pink notes from the comforter, " Emily told me she had a crush." " Ja. You told me that already." " But, I knew it wasn't you. I knew it was Toad she was after." He was quiet a moment. He finally took a deep breath, " Why didn't you tell me that part? This information would have been a little more useful before I attempted to sweep her off her feet." " I wanted to tell you! I was even going to, " Kitty sighed, throwing her hands out. She had looked very deep into his eyes and saw the hurt and humiliation she had caused him. " But, like, you were so happy and excited. I couldn't do it. It was freaky." Still nothing from Kurt. The silence was beginning to kill her. She thought not having to hear him would be a blessing. But, now she wondered if it was a heartless weapon he was now using against her. " I was found out!" She yelled out, " So, I tried to make you feel better. I couldn't bring myself to tell you, myself. So, I, like, just put words on paper." Kurt glanced at the pink notes. Still he said nothing. " Kurt, I'm so sorry. I really and truly am. If I knew it would have cuased such a problem, like, I wouldn't have tried to avoid the whole situation." Nothing. " Kurt, please, dear, God, say something!" " I know you're sorry," he finally said quietly. " Y-you do?" " Ja." He whiped the tears from her face. " You didn't say ‘like' as many time as you usually do. I suppose I did overreact a bit." " So, you...forgive me?" " Or my name isn't Nightcrawler," he smiled. He turned over and sat back on his pillows, bringing Kitty with him in a big hug. She felt the fur on her face even, with the holo-watch on, she could not see it. " So," he said, letting her go, " There's that dance. Wanna go?" Her head double-took to him. Was he joking? " I have no one to go with. I don't want to go stag. Would you mind going with me?" Kitty looked at the notes she had left him. She laughed to herself. " You want to go with me? The one who caused your embaressment?" He shrugged. She laughed again, " Hey, sure. I'm, like, totally for it." A brief pause, " But, this doesn't change anything. You're not my type." With that, Kurt smiled. Whether she meant it or not, he didn't care. He got the whole truth and they made up. With that in mind and well established, they hugged each other again. END |
