03 #10 Renamon's my friend! Ruki's confusion

Opens with Yamaki and his assistant, Reika, tracking a digimon trying to emerge into the human world. A bit tracer wanders along the dome-like display while Yamaki and Reika stare at its progress on a small monitor. From the view of the tracer, we see shards of ice floating in the otherwise neon green landscape of the digital space. Suddenly, a flash of light blue over takes the tracer and destroys it, leaving the two agents perplexed.

After witnessing Growlmon's evolution, Ruki questions just exactly she has done wrong in training Renamon. Both the male tamer's digimon were able to grow stronger and evolve, except her own. As she ponders this, she feels a chill up her back--her breath visible, even in the warmth of summer. The eerie feeling passes as she encounters Calumon, and then her mother who works as a model. Later at her traditional styled Japanese house, the chilling feeling returns, again she stops dead in her tracks, this time reeling to meet the source of the cold--but nothing is there. Renamon appears out of nowhere and seems to notice something is amiss, but as we've seen Renamon react to digimon before, she would most certainly put her guard up if she did in fact recognize a trail of a digimon. Only Impmon is nearby however, and tries to start trouble by telling Renamon that Terriermon had insulted her. Renamon ignores this, reminding him that Terriermon's tamer will not let him fight. Walking back to her room, Ruki again feels the chilling feeling returns, a light blue shadow descends on her... Taking refuge in her room, Renamon appears and Ruki orders her to look outside, she does quickly, and reports nothing is there. Ruki becomes angry with her and Renamon reminds her that she is her partner and is there to protect her. Ruki shocks the digimon by saying she doesn't need a partner, and leaves in anger. Renamon is deeply hurt by this.

Later that night, Ruki is wandering around town, walking alone in a subway. (filled with busy people of course, these places in Japan are actually safe, unlike over here.) Suddenly the chill makes it self known once more, this time Ruki snaps turns quickly and shouts at it--but is left facing two business men with suprised faces. (More like a what the f**k type look, but you get what I mean.) The feeling seemed to have taken on a specter, since she glimpses a white shadow disappearing up a flight of stairs. She climbs them hurridly, away from all the people and into the secluded stairwell. She finds nothing, and collapses against a wall, short of breath. Two white bony hands emerge from the wall behind her and clasp over her mouth and shoulders, pulling her against the wall, dragging her into a digital field...

The next thing Ruki is aware of, is that its extremely cold, wherever she is. From behind her, IceDevimon rises from the ground and wraps his wings around her, lifting her up and cradling her against his chest beneath his wings. (hard to see, but hes actually got both his hands around her entire waist.) At first Ruki questions where they are, and if he is in fact, a digimon. He answers her yes, and they are in his digital field. He then explains that he wants to be her partner, and has traveled there just to do that. Ruki, in still in a trance-like state mentions Renamon, which gets her digimons attention half-way across the city, because of their bond. (She probably wasn't sleeping and was in a state of near exhaustion, thus her gasping for breath at the top of the stairs.) Renamon is all set to look for her, but then recalls the stinging words from Ruki earlier, and falters.

At this point Ruki places her hand over her D-arc and IceDevimon places his huge white claw over hers. (This gave me wierd messages since, isn't it usually an intimate gesture? One of those when a man likes a woman, type thing?) IceDevimon then says he wants to show her something, and spreads his wings, illuminating the space they are in. It turns out to be an icy cave, filled with stalactites and spires of pure ice containing IceDevi's many conquests. Many digimon, to be exact. Each and every one of their eyes locked in an expression of surprise and pain, mouths gaping at the last thing they saw. This starts to get Ruki a bit worried, naturally, since its not everyday someone takes you out on a date to show you the two dozen or so people they've brutally murdered. Or maybe IceDevi's just really macho, like men who cover their living rooms with big game trophies.

As Ruki begins to regain her strength (probably adrenaline flooding her system from taking a peek at her friend's little scoreboard there) her mood turns angry which is her defense mechanism to things that upset her. She wriggles out of IceDevimon's hands, who lets her stand on her own, even though hes about 6 feet taller than her. She begins to argue with him about the meaning of a tamer, which IceDevi answers right back with a question, What IS a tamer? Since Ruki was getting a bit mouthy here, IceDevi reaches out and grabs her arm, (really looks more like a man grabbing a bag of chips since his arms are so long and Ruki's about 3 feet away.)

Since Ruki is still angry and IceDevi could sit and argue forever, he decides to show her just how good a partner Renamon is, and presses the gray toned jewel on his forehead, emitting a ray of blue light which spawns an aurora around the roof top of the building his field sits atop. By this time Takato and Jenrya have gotten the impression that somethings up, and bust in on Ruki's little play date. The two humans and digimon find Ruki with IceDevimon holding both her arms apart. I guess Renamon was taking too long and Ice got bored. Either way Takato and Jenrya scan IceDevimon and come up with his name, level, and type, which in japanese is stated as "Datenshi." (Japanese for 'fallen angel.')

The two boys are not sure what to do, since IceDevi looks that imposing to even them. Guilmon steps up to take a shot at him, and Jenrya tells Terriermon to assist him. Both go right for IceDevi, who promptly freezes both of them solid with a beam of ice shot from his eyes. (I could make so many jokes about this ep, specially if you've played online games, yeah.) Takato and Jenrya try to break out their monsters using cinder blocks and hammers, but to no avail. Jenrya even tries to slash a Meramon's burning flame attack in hopes that the fire would melt the ice, it proves ineffective. Ruki wonders why Renamon hasn't arrived yet, then remembers what she had said to her earlier. Uh oh, doesn't look like shes getting out of this one.

IceDevimon laments the two boy's powerlessness, quite smugly watching Ruki struggle to free herself of his grasp. He reminds her of the creatures trapped in the ceiling, and raises his arms to them, showing her the power she could wield as his tamer. At this point, Renamon decides to finally drop by, and blows a whole in the ceiling, making her entrance. IceDevimon smirks at her. Renamon wastes little time and leaps from her hole in the ceiling to attack. IceDevimon meets her in the air and swats her to the floor, then swoops down as she tries to get off her fox leaf arrowhead attack. She is not fast enough, however, as IceDevi is quickly on her and clubs her with his Frost Claw technique. (Theres a nice echo effect to Renamon as she's beaten during this thats not in the dub, makes the sequence seem a lot longer.)

IceDevi looks back to Ruki grinning as Renamon lies on the floor, damaged. He sneers and points, showing her exactly what her fate is if she is to not choose him. Ruki however finally loses her angry act and admits that Renamon is her friend, and gives her digivice the strength it needs for Renamon to evolve. Rena becomes the nine-tailed Kyuubimon. IceDevi avoids her attempts to fry him with her Demon Fireball, and stops her Dragon Wheel with his Zero Freeze. Then counters with Ice Shower. (I remember in the german version of this episode the sound of the ice hitting the floor had a machine-gun effect applied to it, was very nice.)

While this is going on, Jenrya slashes a card which makes Terriermon inflate and breaks the ice surrounding him and Guilmon. (I'm not sure of the name, but i've seen it before, its a real card in the jap game.) Kyuubimon lies on the floor, foot-long shards of ice scattered around, sticking into the floor like daggers. She unleashes a single demon fire ball which IceDevi easily ducks and it crashes into the roof. Takato makes with the card slashing himself, and uses a combination of Speed-plugin B, and one of the wing cards. (Unsure of the name, because I know the one he uses here and in movie 5 is two seperate cards.) The speed card allows him to guard against IceDevi's retractable claw, (all Devi's have this) and drive him into the cieling. Guilmon then unleashes a fireball of his own, which enhanced by the card slash combination, is enough to destroy him. Cheap shot there, eh? His whole body becomes discorporate and is absorbed by Guilmon, except for his left arm, which falls near Ruki and disintergrates. A final push on Ruki's psych. Quite appropriate, since his claws were the first thing of him she saw, and the last.

Episode closes with Ruki and Kyuubimon going their seperate ways, much to the dismay of Takato and Jenrya. Ending theme is My Tomorrow, sung by Aim, the voice of Mimi in the first season, which I mute the sound on since her voice drives me up the wall. Ending scene is primarily a scene of Takato sitting alone in the rain by himself, and Guilmon and the other tamers coming to find him with umbrellas. As they reach him and hold their hands out, he looks up and the rain stops, and they all go out to play in the sun.

For my final thought, I would say that there were clearly some underlying messages in this ep. Since IceDevi wants to partner up with Ruki in more ways than one. Plus the fact that wasting that many digimon and then keeping them bottled up where you hang out not only makes IceDevi a badass villian, but also hints on pschosis. (Many serial killers who keep souveniers like this do so for sexual gratification, a good example of this is Jeffrey Dahmer, though he wasn't straight and definately did things with his little 'trophies.' I would relate the act of him doing that in a more libido driven sense of pride and accomplishment, but definately a sadistic one. I think Ruki and him woulda make an interesting partnership, even though she only enticed him because of her heartlessness and cold anger, which was due to her inability to deal with her own emotions.

04 #36

Information on this episode is conceptual since i've not seen it, or the entire season, for that matter. From what i've gathered from various reviews, the chosen children accidently free IceDevimon outside of Cherubimon's castle. Seems this IceDevimon is also bent on humans, since he wants the data of some. With guys like this watching your door, who needs enemies? It seems IceDevi had been imprisoned for going on a little GTA-style rampage across the digital world, and was gearing up to do it again. Once freed, IceDevimon quickly makes short work of Kaze and Blitzmon, and takes hold of Takuya and Kouji. (I'm thinking it has to do with ice torture, since i've seen a rather nice little adult pic featuring Kouji and IceDevi's ice confetti.)

Kouichi's intense urge to help is mate--brother, I mean, ah dammit, lemme go back and do it again, ah f**k it, i've already screwed it up. His determination to help frees Junpei and Izumi from their icy prisons. They then slide-evolve and cook IceDevimon. Ouch there buddy. He serves as a warning of Cherubimon's intense power, and the children are left to ponder it.

Whew, wasn't even gonna do the frontier ep since I haven't seen it, but that should be enough.
