Hierglyphs are pictures used to communicate language. The ancient Egyptians used more than 700 different hieroglyphs in their writings. They wrote hieroglyphs on papyrus and carved hieroglyphs on stone, ceramic, and wood. Hieroglyphs have played an important part in helping archaeologists to decipher the culture and history of ancient Egypt.
