I've been getting tattooed since I was 18 (1990). My first was The Cat in the Hat on my left shoulder by a biker named Maniac in Youngstown. It is now covered by an Alfons Mucha-inspired piece. The original coverup was done in 1996 by Jeff Ortega at Rising Dragon in NYC (about 8 hours). Several years later, my friend Tony Barbaro of Tattoos by Barbaro in Leechburg, PA touched it up and added the lovely red tropical flowers.
My sleeve (shown below). I started out with the sacred heart done by the aforementioned creep. It quickly faded. Rhonda at Sacred Tattoo in NYC did a great job covering and recoloring parts. Jeff Kennedy at Tattoo Factory in NJ did the dragon surrounding it (six hours). James Vaughn completed the sleeve, much of which was done freehand. It was done between his shop in NC and my apartment in NYC between 1996 and 1999 in a few sittings of about 7 hours each (agony!!). The geisha was inspired by a nineteenth century woodblock print by Kensai Eisen. The sleeve totalled about 30 hours. James is a sweetie pie and decorated me for free - otherwise my arms would be nearly bare!
These Egyptian pieces I got soon after I started getting tattooed. They are pretty crappy but hey, I didn't know any better back then. Due to their placement and quality they are rarely seen so consider yourself special ;). I'm not naming the artist because although he is a creep, he has turned out to be a fine tattooist.
I got the Woman's Ruin piece in 1996 during my first trip to Las Vegas. It was done by Creeper at Tattoos-R-Us. He also has his own shop in Anaheim, CA called Primitive Basic. The woman is from a Reverend Horton Heat t-shirt and the rest of the design is custom. It took about 5 hours.
Yeah, I know everybody has one but I've always wanted one too. This is my most recent tattoo, done in 2002 by JFK (Jeff Fuckin' Kohl) of Old Glory Tattoo in Charlotte, NC. Took about four hours I think.
Saints Benedict and Scholastica were twins. St. Scholastica is my patron saint. These were done in two sessions of five hours each by my dear friend and favorite tattooist James Vaughn. He owns Straight A Tattoo in Asheboro, NC.
