So how did I get into Fushigi Yuugi? Well, that's a complex question which I can't wait to answer.
See, I'm fairly new to anime...particularly sub-titled anime. I've been watching Digimon and Pokemon for nearly 2 years and watched some other anime that was on tv (dubbed) a little after that. Sub-titled, I only started watching this past September (2001) cuz my fellow ani-freak Laura and I finally got our hands on a rental card from our local comic/anime store (Bless you, Laura's mom...to you I am eternally grateful!!)
So yea, FY...from the begining of surfing the web for Digimon/anime stuff I've been told to watch Fushigi Yuugi but I kinda shrugged it off since I was only intressted in Digimon at that point in time. Then I happened upon one of my fave yaoi sites which had a pic of these "Hotohori and Nuriko" people who the webmistress was gushing over saying they were gorgeous..I opened the pick and decided the opposite ( it was a REALLY bad manga pic...) but the name Hotohori stuck with me and so did Fushigi Yuugi.
Then while having a downloading fit with Napster, I was trying to rememeber anime titles I'd heard of so I could test out the music. FY popped into my head and (with much difficulty spelling the title) I wound up with the opening theme and Hotohori's Dengon. I loved both the songs but my computer soon got sick and I lost them *cries*
Anywayz...at the end of August, my friend Laura's mom got her (ie: US!!) a rental card and we tried to decide what we wanted to rent. We picked up Slayers first cuz we'd seen the first 4 tapes and wanted to see the rest and Evagelion since Laura had seen a bit and wanted to rent more. We wanted to rent 1 more tape but we didn't know what...then a name popped into my head; Fushigi Yuugi. I suggested it, saying that for as long as I could remember people on-line suggested it saying that it was amazing. Laura said she'd heard the same. So we got FY on a whim, neither of us knowing much more than a few charcter names. ( I knew of Hotohori and Laura had heard of Tamahome) The best thing I've ever done on a whim EVER!
We watched that first tape and we were sold from the first scene...I dunno why, since my Tas-chan doesn't come in until like eppi 14 or something...but we were addicted. I've seen a lot more anime since then but it's still one of my faves (along with Slayers.)
I started reading the manga a little while later and I love to death as well, some parts are even funnier than the anime...
*sigh* Fushigi Yuugi is great.....I hope everything I do on a whim will turn out that well. :p
