Past
Hotohori, aka Saihitei, is the young emperor of China. He has been on the throne since his father passed away when he was fourteen. Being put on the throne so young made Saihitei grow up around adluts and no other children which is why he acts so old. I nearly fell over when it was mentioned he was only 18 o.O
Saihitei has 2 older brothers (one of whom plays a large role in Tasuki's Genrou Den novel), younger brother and two younger sisters all of different mothers. His mother fought long and hard to get Hotohori on the throne, and when it was discovered he was a Suzaku seishi that pretty much sealed the deal.
Hotohori's upbringing was lonely as already mentioned, and because of it he never had any friends or anyone to love. This is why he's drawn to Miaka. She's so friendly and outgoing that she just draws people to her.
I haven't read Hotohori's novel so I don't know much else about him ^^;; Anyone want to give me info?

* Although he's in love with Miaka, Hotohori marries Houki towards the end of the series. They have a child named Boushin
*He's a total narcissist and quite naivee about the world around him because of his sheltered upbringing
*For the seishi-finding arc, Chichiri poses as Hotohori so that the Emperor can go with Miaka and Nuriko
