welcome to this little site i've put up just for you, my friends, who have been asking me about basic computer security. the internet is a dangerous place as well as a place of wonder, education and entertainment. it's critical that you take some basic steps to protect yourself from viruses, trojans, spyware, and other nasties so you can safely enjoy the benefits of the net. these pages are FAR from a complete reference on computer security; there are many great sites out there with much more info (some links to get you started are on the bottom of this page.) this is just our private reference to assist you with the most fundamental first steps; hope you find it helpful. and remember, there is no substitute for plain good judgement! as you begin to comprehend the threats out there, it's easy to become so concerned that you lose the pleasure of the Net. think of it this way: in the 'real world' you're careful about walking in dangerous areas or flashing what valuables you're carrying; yet you don't usually hide in the house, or go out wearing a suit of armor--that would interfere with your enjoyment too much. understanding the threats and taking reasonable precautions are the keys to sensible safety. here are some basic recommendations for you (good idea to follow them in order): basic security programs: here i'll recommend the very basic programs you ought to have running to help keep you safe and secure. basic e-mail safety: e-mail is the biggest source of viruses today. here's some good hints on sending and receiving e-mail more safely. securing your computer: some fundamental (and not so fundamental) steps to take to make sure your computer is ready for safer internet-ing, and ready to recover from a disaster. safer surfing: how to secure your browser better, and develop safer browsing habits on the net. and don't forget gracie's za pages, our 5 part reference to using zone alarm personal firewall. ------- some other good links: * cert (the computer emergency response team) puts out a great very basic 'starter' guide to security on the web; many of my recommendations were inspired by their home networking section. * uiuc privacy and security pages is a great collection of information on security, privacy, and malware (nasties) and comprehensive lists of related programs. * buzz waldrat's links is a collection of faqs and links to sites regarding security, privacy, and related concerns. * the list of lists is just that--an extensive group of links to all kinds of security-related info. * surasoft has news on security and privacy related matters as well as faqs, as does security news portal, securitywatch, and security focus. always a work in progress! while i cannot answer specific questions, feel free to send me suggestions and corrections for this site. |
