pete's diner
pete's diner
Exiting the dirty cab I took a deep breath of the smog filled air. Good ole New York. I walked into Pete's Diner. I took a seat in the closet booth to the door. I took a sip of my water as I pulled out my box of cigarettes. I lit one up and took a drag off it. "Can I get yaw anything Hun?" The waitress asked me.
"Yeah, I'll have a cup of coffee and cheeseburger and fries."
"Anything else?"
"Hmm no thanks." She smiled and waddled off to give the cook my order. God what am I doing back here? I shouldn't have ever came here. The doorbell jingled as a customer entered. I turned back hoping to meet my eye's with the person who was suppose to be here. I looked down at my watch. I'm early, go figure. The waitress came back with my coffee.
"I'll be back with your food."
"Thanks."I said smiling. I took another puff off my "cancer stick". I wondered to myself, why did they used to call them cancer sticks? Easy moron they can give you lung cancer. I shook my head at my stupidity. I looked down at my watch once again. The person is 10 minutes late. Damn it! I cursed. The waitress, I looked at her nametag. Flow is read. Flow arrived with my food,"Thanks."
“Anytime Hun.” She smiled. The doorbell rang as the person entered. It was him. He slid in the booth across from me.
"Hey, sorry I'm late."
"Whatever."I shrugged it off.
"I'm glad you decided to meet me down here."
“Yeah well, ”I paused as I took another long and deep drag off my cigarette; “It wasn’t easy. I had to take time off work, and get a babysitter. You should be thankful I even talked to you on the phone." He just grinned.
"How's Marrisa?"
"She's just fine. She ask's everyday about you."
"Listen, Sarah. I want to see Marrisa."
I sighed taking off my glasses rubbing my temples. “I don’t know Zac. You just left me there pregnant and lonely and heart broken." I put out my cigarette and took a bite of my burger.
"Sarah, I'm sorry. You know I had to leave. I had my music."
"Yeah, and it show's me just how much more you cared for your damn music than me. Do you know how much I struggled to keep Marrisa from dying? She's been in and out of the hospitals? I tried so hard to contact you but you never responded back. So I just thought you didn't care. So I just gave up."
Zac peered into my green eyes."Sarah, I'm sorry. I never had time to write to you. I couldn't tell my parent's about you so I couldn't call."
"Thanks Zac that's just great. You know what? I think I'm going to pay for my food and leave and go back to Philadelphia."
"No, Sar. Don't do that."
“So now that you’re washed up career is done you want to be part of Marissa’s life?”
"Sarah you're not being fair?"
"Not fair? I'll show you not fair. It's not fair you just leave me there hanging. I had to leave my parents because of what you did to me."
"Last, I checked you wanted it too."Came back Zac.
"Yeah, but I didn't leave you." There was a deadly silence between them. Flow came back.
She could feel the tension in the air. "Can I get you anything there sweetie?" She asked Zac.
"Coffee please." I got up and grabbed my purse. "Where are you going?"
"The bathroom if you don't mind." I rushed off the bathroom and locked the stall. I stood there for a minute with my eye's fulfilling with glistening tears. No I will not cry. I breathed in deeply. I unlocked the stall I had entered minutes before. I took a quick glance in the mirror my ivory skin seemed much paler then usual. I pushed a piece of curly red hair out of my face. I exited the bathroom. I paused to see Zac talking to Flow.
"Flow, I just don't know what to do."
"Hmm, yes I see. How long have I known you?"
"You've known me for 12 years'."
"Yes, that's right. Ever since you were 11. And now you're 22. You're a fine young man. Do you love her?"
"Yes, with all my heart."
"Oh, here she come's. I know you'll do the right thing." Flow winked at Zac as I sat down.
"What was that all about?"
"N-n-nothing. Zac stuttered."
"Zac, I have to go."
"Where are you staying?"
"I don't know yet. Probably a Motel 6. I don't know."
"Stay with me."Zac said taking a hold of my hands.
“Zac ,I don’t know.”
"Please say you'll stay with me." He pleaded caressing his thumb over my hand.
How could I not give into those brown eyes melting like caramel on a hot summers’ day. A small smile made its way through my lips,"All right."
"Great."Her said squeezing my hand. Flow came by minutes later.
"Will that be all for ya hun?" He big New York accent showing.
“Yeah, thanks.” I shook my head. She handed me the bill.
"Thanks for coming."
"Here I got it."Zac said taking the bill from my hands.
"Zac, you're letting me stay with you. And it was me that ate so I'm going to pay."
"No, now don't argue." I rolled my eyes as Zac pulled out a 10. He left it on the table. He stood up from the booth he had been squished in. Stretching his bold muscles. I scooted out of the booth retrieving my purse and coat. Zac opened the door for me.
"You're to kind."I joked. Zac only smiled. Zac hailed out a Taxi. "Wow. The infamous Zac Hanson doesn't own a truck like he said he would on the Jay Leno Show? Wow, that's hard to believe."
"Oh, be quiet. It's New York. Not enough room for my "truck".
"Oh riiight." Zac opened the door for me as I jumped in. Zac sat next to me putting his arm around my shoulder. I looked at Zac.
"What?"
"Zac,"I sighed;"This can't happen."
"What?" I removed Zac's arm.
"I don't know if I'm ready to forgive you yet." Zac sighed as I heard the distress in his voice.
"Make a right up here." Zac told the driver. "Stop here."Zac told the driver after he made the right turn. Zac paid the driver and he opened the door letting himself out and me. Zac pulled the door open to the apartment building. We walked for it seemed like ages up the stairs. The 13th floor Zac lives on. How ironic. I thought it Zac opened the door letting me in first. "Nice place." I said taking in the scenery.
"Sorry if it seem's a little messy."
"At least you don't have baby toy's all around."
"I wish I did." I eyed Zac curiously. Zac quickly changed the subject. "You can sleep in my bed."
"Zac, no it's all right. You can have your bed. It's your apartment."
"You're the guest, so I insist you have my room."
"Zac no. I'm taking over your room."
"We'll see about that. But in the mean time do you want anything to drink?"
"No thanks."I said plopping my fat butt down on Zac's colorful couch. Zac returned into the room I was in with a pop in his hand. He sat down n next to me.
"So, tell me Sarah, how have you been?"
"I've been all right. My mom feels sorry for me so she's been "accidentally" leaving money at my apartment and telling me to keep it after I tell her."
"How's Marisa?"
"She's good."
"Do you have a picture of her?"
"Mhmmm. She looks so much like you." I pulled out my billfold and took out a picture of my I mean our daughter. Hehe. Zac grasped the picture in his hands.
"She's beautiful."
"She has your eyes."I stated Zac's smile never faded.
"How old is she now?"
"She's 4. She's at that bratty stage, but I still love her."
"I don't even know her and I love her. Oh please let me meet her." I looked into Zac's pleading eyes.
I sighed taking hold of Zac's hands,"Zac......"
Before I could finish Zac cut in,"She's my daughter too ya know."
"I know, but I'm afraid she'll get attached to you and then you'll abandon her and me." Zac brought my hand to his lips. My face turning pink.
"Why do you blush?"
"I don't know. Look I'm tired. So could you go get me some blankets?"
"Why? You're going to sleep in my room."
"I feel as I'm imposing."
"Trust me you're not." I gave Zac a brief hug. "Thank you." Zac showed me to his room.
"Ok well there's the bathroom,"Zac said pointing to the room close to the bed."And there's the bed."
I laughed,"As I can see."
Zac smiled,"If you need me you know where to find me." Zac shut the door behind him. I looked around the fairly small room. Damn how does Zac get dressed in here. I silently laughed. I threw off my shirt and long black skirt kicking them to the side of the room. I crawled into the unmade bed. Taking in the smell of his pillowcase. The sweet smell of strawberry shampoo. I closed my eye's thinking of how much Zac would make a great daddy. I sat up removing the pony tale holder from my hair letting the long red curls fall. Just as I was about to doze off into dream world lightning filled the pitch-black room. I jumped up, ok Sarah it's only a storm, calm down. Laying back down thunder rocked the room. Do I go to Zac and tell him I'm frightened because of some stupid storm or do I stay in this black as hell room with thunderous thunder and bright lightning. I jumped up opening the door and rushing out of the room. I kneeled down by Zac. I shook him softly,"Zac, Zac. Get up." Awe shit! I forgot to throw my cloths on, so here I am kneeling down by Zac in my bra and panties. Great. "Zac." Zac moaned.
"Wha? What?" He asked cautiously opening his eyes.
"Zac, ok I may sound like a retard but..... I'm scared."
"Why?" He asked turning to face me.
"The storm. Come sleep with me."
"You sure?"
"Yes, come on hurry." I stood up waiting for him to lag his butt off the couch. We walked off to his room where I squeezed through the small door opening just as lightning once again lit up the room. I jumped. Zac opened the door up more so he could fit inside. I got under the covers as well as he did.
"Night, Sar."
"Night Zac. And thank you."
"Mhmm."He managed to say. Thunder sent vibrations through the wall, which sent waves of volume to the bed. I snuggled up with Zac as he placed his arm across my stomach. The side of my cheek pressed against his chest raising with each breath he took in. I could hear the music of his heartbeat. Inhaling the sweet smell of soap. I hazily fell asleep. When morning arose Zac was still in bed with me staring down at me.
"Good morning."He spoke softly.
"Hey."I smiled. "Thanks for staying with me last night."
"No problem. It was my pleasure." I sighed remembering the last time I was like this with Zac. And how hours later he left me and he was never seen again except for the occasional TV appearances. "Zac."
"Yeah?"
"I want you to meet Marissa."I said looking into those big puddles of mud.
Zac's eye's glew with excitement,"Really?!?"
"Yeah."
Zac took me in his arms,"Oh god Sarah I love you." I froze did he just say I love you?
"I love you too Zac." Zac smile was bigger than ever.
"Sarah, marry me."
"Ok." Zac's embrace tightened on me.
"Come on let's get packing."
I smiled,"Have fun, I didn't really bring anything but my toothbrush and hair stuff."
"You didn't bring extra clothes?"
"No, I thought I'd go shopping and get something."
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Well I think some of my ex girlfriend's left some of their stuff over here."
I gave Zac a disgusted look,"No Zac." I got out of bed putting my skirt and shirt back on.
Zac and I boarded the plane. I fell asleep on Zac's shoulder probably drooling on him I wouldn't doubt it. Hours passed and the plane landed. Zac shook me,"Get up Sarah."
"Hmmm? I'm up." I looked up at Zac with sleepy eyes. I stood up with Zac ushering me quickly to get off the plane. "And Mr.Hanson why are we in a rush?"I questioned.
"I've been waiting four years to see my daughter. I'm anxious." I took hold of Zac's hand.
"Come on." It was me this time that hailed the Taxi. I crawled in the taxi with Zac behind me. 15 minutes later we pulled up to a broken down building which just happens to be my apartment building. "Sorry it's not like yours."
"Hey it's ok." Zac reassured me. I walked through the broken down doors letting Zac in. And thank god my room is on the main floor. I put my key in the lock and unlocked my door. Marissa came running to the door with a huge grin on her face. I looked up at Zac whose smile was a mile long.
I scooped up my daughter. "Marissa, I want you to meet your daddy."
The ground began to shake and at a sudden halt it stopped. "Ma'am, we've landed."
"Oh ok." My eye's adjusted to the brightly-lit sky. I walked off the plane and in search of my luggage and a taxi. Half an hour later I found myself walking down the street to find Pete’s Diner; to see his blonde hair drinking his coffee and waiting for me. Well here goes nothing. Before entering the diner I wondered when I was on the plane if what happened in my dream would come true. Well there's only one way to find out. I entered the diner as he looked up at me. He smiled as I smiled back. "Zac." I sighed. My mind was screaming at me to tell him I love him, but all I did was sit and watch his smile grow bigger and bigger when I told him about his daughter back home.
