The episode opens to a "flow of consciousness" images. After a few moments of burning candles, falling crosses and cawing birds, the viewer is introduced to Kyosuke Date for the first time. He stumbles across his mother who has been brutally attacked and now lies bleeding to death on the altar of her church. Kyosuke comforts her and begns to leave to find help. His mother stops him. When Kyosuke turns around, he finds a knife plunged into his heart. As he falls down a flight of stairs and through the floor, he can only think "why?".
a few days later, it is raining. A girl named Maya Misaki is digging in a graveyard. She unearths Kyosukes's casket and finds him and a black cat inside it. The cat runs away, but Maya takes Kyosuke to her apartment to care for him. When he awakens, Kyosuke is amazed to be alive, much less bandaged and well taken care of. Maya explains who she is (she's a nurse) and she allows Kyosuke to stay with her.
