Maya Misaki was the first "flicker" that Kyosuke met, actually, she was the one who unearthed him from an untimely burial. She feels bonded to Kyosuke from the first time they meet, she even cries tears of blood,like kyosuke later does when he establishes a telepathic connection to a "flicker". Maya is kidnapped by the Kirihara shortly after she rescues Kyosuke. Along with a new possible ally, Shiro, Kyosuke pursues them relentlessly, hoping to repay some of Maya's kindness for saving him.

Maya is killed and dissected by a Kirihara scientist before Kyosuke can save her, despite his best efforts, he is too late. She manages to say goodbye in a vision and tells him thank you for sspnding time with her, its what she always wanted. Later, when Kyosuke uncovers the cell Maya was held in, he finds the words "thank you" carved into the floor. Kyosuke vows to protect all "flickers" and his sister from that moment on.
