The herb garden is one of the newest gardens here at Casa Rosa. It is placed to the west of the house, with a huge holly on one side, and the driveway wrapping around the other two sides. Along the driveway we have begun a shrub border with a mix of evergreens, roses, and other shrubs to seperate the herb garden and make it more secluded. The herb garden beds are more organic shapes rather that the traditional rigid squares. The beds have a river rock edging. The central feature is a column and sun dial in the center bed. So far, we have planted bulbs, two fruit trees (to be trained into topiary shapes), salvia, mints (in the shadiest bed), chamomile, various thymes, rue, feverfew, oregano, dwarf box, variegated box, and peonies in the beds. There is a moss rose called Soupert et Notting in the shadier bed and the Rosa gallica officinalis or the Apothecary Rose in the sunnier bed. There is a small yellow mystery rose that I refer to as "Call" in the center bed. In the shrub border we have: Ballerina at one end and a variegated holly at the other, pyracanthus pomegranite, chestnut rose, cherry laurels, Hansa, buddleia, The Fairy, Autumn Damask and 'Mme. Plantier' rose. |
