Welcome to the menagerie.

Here at the Casa we have two spoiled house cats, twelve bantam chickens, one quail, and two rabbits, as well as neighborhood visitors and wildlife.

The cats really appreciate the garden, especially the cat mint.

>chicks eating with mamma hen The chickens really appreciate the treats they get from the garden, such as tomatoes, their favorite. I appreciate the mulch they return to the garden. To make a new bed, i take the soiled hay from the chicken run and use it as mulch, without composting first. This has worked out really well. See more chickens on the Chicken Page.

The two rabbits, Fred and Ginger Tom (both male) also enjoy bits from the garden. Fred has decided he no longer cares to reside with Ginger Tom and has dug his way out to co-habitate with the chickens. He has even developed a fondness for chicken feed and the chickens enjoy pecking at Fred's alfalfa feed when it is in reach.
> There are also some neighbor's cats and dogs that occasionally visit as well as some wild birds, snakes, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, and raccoons. Oh, and the dreaded moles and voles.

Some of our wild birds include chimney swifts which nest several times a year on our front porch light. Some bluebirds moved into our bluebird house hung on a pole in the rose garden within two weeks of hanging the house. It has been a real pleasure to watch the parents take turns bringing food and they allow me to get quite close to the house as long as I am pretending to work in the garden and not notice them.

The wren houses were also occupied immediately by wrens and chickadees. We have not had as much luck with the martin house though.

There are also lots of cardinals, woodpeckers, goldfinches, hummingbirds, titmice, mockingbirds, brownthrashers, and blue jays. I enjoy watching them at the feeders and in the garden.
